Anyone see any good deals for a (light) gaming laptop lately?

Also, this place is so dead lately...depressing.

Anyway, looking for a smaller laptop (coming from a 10" netbook, so anything bigger than that is acceptable) with an Intel CPU and dedicated GPU, GPU can be lower-end or older, just not integrated. Looking to spend as little as possible of course, perhaps <$700. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I really should've pulled the trigger on some stuff I saw around Christmas but I chickened out...

Well, Newegg might have what you're looking for, a quick search produced this: MSI 15.6" CX62 7QL-058 Intel Core i5 7th Gen 7200U (2.50 GHz) NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 8 GB Memory 1 TB HDD Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit Gaming Laptop - Newegg.com. although there were slightly cheaper things available, perhaps -$50 or so, that I would still buy.

It also has a fairly recent video card in it.

It depends a little on your requirements too. The above mentioned laptop has poor resolution, no SSD and a watered-down processor.
Personally, I'd go for something like Acer 15.6" V5-591G-55PV Intel Core i5 6th Gen 6300HQ (2.30 GHz) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M 8 GB Memory 256 GB SSD Windows 10 Home Gaming Laptop - Newegg.com. You probably need to upgrade the RAM to 16 GB, which may cost an additional $50~ish.

What I would recommend: SSD, min 16 GB of RAM, quad-core CPU (look for HQ in the name), Full HD resolution. Beware of screen reflections, though. You may want to get a matte screen (reduces reflections) and be sure to get an IPS panel (way better viewing angles and color than those cheap, pesky TN panels). These things are usually not explicitly listed anywhere in the specs, though.

Amazon is probably a good source too.

I know. It makes me sad too T_T

Maybe people just aren't that into learning C++ anymore?

There are probably other sources absorbing new users. Not sure how C++'s waning popularity balances out versus more people around the globe going "online" each year. Getting more C++ discussion on the board could be as easy as not putting the link to this forum at the bottom of cprogramming.com, and removing the "I have read all the rules and will do searches on old topics instead of asking dumb questions" checkbox (it was years back, but I recall something like that) from the registration process. Other forums offer less barriers, so naturally beginners will gravitate there, even if the quality of the discourse may be lower.

I don't think cprogramming.com poses any barriers what-so-ever. I'm pretty sure that people find Cboard through a google search and not necessarily through the parent site - the site's value is through here and google knows that.

I know I can say that for my part, I didn't feel like answering questions here, and that there were other people who would do a better job, also.

I actually have no idea where people go to learn C++ anymore. It might be Reddit. There's probably tons of learn-programming subs and the like. I bet most noobs just go there.

I only found this place by typing in "c forums" into google and it led me here.

I must say, I'm happy that I found this place. Honestly, it was you guys that really taught me how to program. And I know Nominal doesn't post here anymore but he single-handedly put me on the path that I'm on today. phantom was also another really big influence even though he doesn't post here anymore. phantom convinced me that the more grumpy and curmudgeonly a programmer is, the better they are. I would've considered it a privilege to work for him. But God knows where he wound up. Same with Nominal. I hope they're okay and are doing well in life.

I'm glad we still have Mario though. I know we lost grumpy too. * sigh *

Unfortunately, it seems like feelings always get in the way. As programmers, I feel like we have a certain zeal and sometimes that zeal can lead to ideological conflicts that are unresolvable, leaving the only practical solution to simply be just walking away.

It's a sad state of things. We've lost a lot of great programmers this way. I'm determined to at least stick around here and pop in every now and again. I think it's important that we try to check our feelings though. But then again, if you're not happy, you're not happy.

Ha, awesome. I'll have to shoot him an email then, just to see what he's up to.

Then you probably would have ended up in a different forum if you were learning C++ and typed "C++ forums" instead. For me typing "C forums" brings this site as the top pick, but "C++ forums" this site is at the bottom of the first page with several other forums prior to this one. But if one were to type "C++ Homework help" this site is no where to be seen on the first page of results, and I doubt that many beginners are going to go much farther than one page in the results.

A lot of people on here may have accounts on other forums too. I know for a fact Salem has/did have an account on Code Project.

    Sorry Salem

Also - there are a lot of newbie coders joining more "hip" (hip being the obtuse word here) forums such as Stack Overflow which is extremely popular with senior and well established coders. Some of who do appear to come off quite arrogant at times, but TBH they have probably earned such a right as to be so established in their field. Cboard is still popular, and we do get a few new members monthly. Most post once then leave, others stay a while. There used to be a thread called OT (Old Timers) which listed the forums long standing members. I think I was on it, as was Bubba, Salem, Prelude, Daved and many other memorable posters. Anyone remember Vart or Adak?

Adak sounds familiar. But yeah, I forgot about Stack Overflow... Hmm...

I don't wanna sound like a dick but SO is better, imo. The search results are easily google-able and there's a lot of good information.

However, actually using SO is entirely different. The site sucks. If you're into computational geometry, good luck finding a place to get your question answered.

Also, the point of SO is to create a repository of non-duplicate answers, and so the power users don't react to kindly if your question has the "wrong format". I think that the back-and-fourth in a regular forum is nicer and hard to replace by stock answers, or by reading documentation. My favourite way of learning is to read up on something, get a mental model of it, and then share that model with experienced users for correction/confirmation. Alas, many react allergic to that approach (RTFM); for me nothing else comes close in enjoyment.
