    Your OS History

    Little bit of fun.

List the operating systems you have owned from the
earliest you can remember to the latest you use right now.
It cannot be work OS's just ones for personal use.

    Here's mine..

    Windows 3.1
    Windows 95
    Windows 98
    Windows XP (SP 1, 2 and 3)
Windows Vista Home (yeah, I had it)
    Windows 7 Home
    =============
    MAC OSX Leopard
    =============
    Windows 8
    Windows 8.1
    Windows 10 Home.

Wow, I paid Microsoft a sh** ton of cash!

Does OS/2 count? Otherwise, we're similar. I might have used a mac at my friend's house a few times

Oh goodness, my memory isn't that good.

    DOS
    Windows 3.1
    Windows 95
    Windows 98
    OS/2 Warp
    Windows ME
    Red Hat Linux
    FreeBSD
    Windows 2000
    Windows XP
    Knoppix
Solaris (don't recall the specific version)
    Linux Mint
    Mandriva (Mandrake Linux)
OSX (most of them, still using on my laptop)
    Windows Vista
    Windows 7 (current work OS)
    Windows 8
    Windows 8.1
    Windows 10 (current home OS)

I've *used* various flavors of Linux, but they vary and are interspersed greatly. The ones listed stand out though. Now that I think about it, I should install BSD again...that was a great system.

    > Windows Vista Home (yeah, I had it)

I had Vista Home Premium, but my experience is it was a solid system that worked perfectly until 7. Apparently I was one of the lucky few who had no issues.

p.s. Some of my best posts here were from a Windows ME machine.

Oh dear, the list is too long. I won't bore you to death. I'll just resume it more or less historically, between work and home OSes.

    MS-DOS (since 2.something) (also PC-DOS)
    AS/4000
    VAX/VMS
Mac OS (some version circa late 80s)
    NeXTSTEP
    OS/2
    BeOS
All Windows (excluding Me, Vista, 8 and 10)
    Linux (mostly Arch and Debian-based)

    MS-DOS
    Windows 3.11
    Windows 95
    Windows 98
Windows ME (yep, used it once, but promptly got rid of it shortly afterwards)
    Windows 2000
    Windows XP
Windows Vista (maybe it's just me, but it worked just fine for me; probably the peak OS in visual and audio goods)
    Windows 7 (current home OS)
    Windows 8
    Windows 8.1
Windows 10 (current work OS; have downgraded all my computers from this awful OS)

Also used some linux distros, mainly due to school work:

    Red Hat
    Fedora
    Ubuntu
    Mint

We should do one for PCs/hardware too, if you can remember the details. I think that would be interesting.

    My OS history*:

    Windows 95
    Windows 98
    Windows XP
    Windows 7
Xubuntu 14.04 (and ever since, now 16.04)

*proper daily use, I test-drove many, including Windows 10.

To be perfectly fair it was only because of two coincidences. My path is sort of an exception on folks my age. You'll find most will have lists not very different than you guys.
It's just that my very first job was at Alcatel and I was exposed to the corporate computing models of the time around mainframes and minicomputers.
Similarly, The raison d'être of Mac OS, NeXTSTEP, OS/2 and BeOS was because soon after I entered university I joined JUNITEC, a company formed by students to serve as a bridge between the university and the corporate world. We would invest on all sorts of technology as a means to support our goals of a) providing employment opportunities to students on any kind of tech sector and b) providing business solutions to the corporate sectors. And this just happened to happen right when the OS wars were being fought.

You'll find something odd on that list though. No UNIX whatsoever. And that's true. I had 0 exposition to UNIX outside classes. Doesn't make much sense at that time. But it's how my boat sailed. I think part of the reason was the transition period at the time. The huge influence that Mac OS and NeXTSTEP was having on my university for one. But also the very low tech in the country's corporate sector, which was either dominated by the old IBM mainframes at the large scale government and private sectors, or the pencil and paper of the SM sector. Portugal itself was never big on UNIX outside universities.

    Here's my list:
    CP/M
    DOS 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
    Windows 2, 3.0, 3.1
Windows 95 for a few months until it crashed once too often, corrupting the filesystem in the process, then never used any Windows 95 based system again.
    OS2 2.0, 3.0
    Windows NT4
Redhat Linux (predating Fedora/Enterprise split) (home system).
    Windows 2000
    dabbled with Suse Linux
    Mandrake Linux
    PCLnuxOS
    Mageia Linux
    Now evaluating Fedora 24

Have tried various other flavors of Linux but I seem to prefer Mandrake based systems. And I have briefly looked at XP when I bought a new system, but after about a half hour installed Linux and never used XP since. Same with Windows 7, received a system with this system, played a little, then installed Linux. Haven't seriously used Windows since Windows 2000.

Wow amazing lists everyone thank you so much for sharing.

Sort of on the topic, I have always pondered if this rumor was ever true.
Speaking of Vista and it's past problems, was one of the main reasons it
was developed for so long past the shipping of drivers etc. due to MS
requesting the entire OS being written in .NET?

I have heard the programmers were very burnt out with fatigue after being
told to scrap the whole thing and re-write it in C/C++/ASM. Sort of goes back
to the thread about deadlines in a way. Crazy really. .NET (well even back then)
probably would never have logically worked - it's too above the metal.

What about all those 8-bit micros from the late 1970's through the 1980's ?
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.
