You must have missed Soma's post about the UK government planning to ban end-to-end encryption. I believe that's what Mario was referring to.
What can this strange device be?
When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
It's got wires that vibrate and give music
What can this thing be that I found?

A ban on encryption is not the objective.
    O_o

    I disagree.

The governments want for a situation where vendors must be capable of decryption for the products and services provided.

A ban on encryption which can't be easily decrypted by a third-party is just a ban on encryption wearing the "We are the good guys!" hat Salem referenced.

I think in the end they will, because societies tend to numb down their reaction and lose the ability to complain and demand as a block, when changes are made progressively and in such a way that each steps doesn't disturb to much.
I agree. I agree, and I am genuinely afraid of our future.

Another aspect that troubles me greatly is how much of this can be done behind closed doors in private and secret agreements, without the knowledge of consumers.
Indeed. I can't imagine that a nice and quiet with key certificate authorities isn't in the works if such has not already occurred.

It's likely to me that governments will not stop in this quest of theirs.
Oh, no. Give up? I think we are still just seeing the start.

We might see some governments stop if a sufficiently important service is publicly and disastrously broken before things get to far down the road to banning encryption.

The worst part is... a good politician could spin even that into a ploy for the golden key.

Hey, he said I don't understand object lifetime. That hurt me. It hurt me real bad. But not like this, whiteflags. Not like this.

    Edit:

Omg, this does remind of the first time I met phantom and I said he was acting like a real phallus. Good times, man. I think that was about the time I decided that I liked this site because the posters here keep it real.

Sometimes too real though and I feel like we've lost a lot of good posters or they just lost interest overall (I'm thinking of grumpy and Nominal).
