As whiteflags said, vbseo was in fact the principal cause of instability once the backups had been cleaned up, and I spent multiple hours debugging it. (It was also pretty terrible for the server's performance; disabling it appears to have substantially improved load averages and, anecdotally, the shell is much snappier.)

All that said, I'm going to try out DragonByte's version of the like button!

Using sscanf to parse/match an GPS (NMEA) string
The board posted the same message twice.
    I've hidden the 2nd post.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

array asking for constant value (I am giving constant values)
Another board generated double post (2nd one deleted).

Also, +n for a local like feature.
In the absence of "like", perhaps there is an option to "rate this post" to go along with the "rate this thread" which appears at the start of each thread.

Also also, I still get database timeout issues at around 6am BST (GMT+1).

The forum is super laggy right now, barely usable.

Special characters (at least the backslash) in URLs are not being properly encoded.

For example, the thread titled "fgets to read a line without returning the new line char \n" (user: khaliiid1992) leads to the URL:

    http://cboard.cprogramming.com/c-programming/164877-fgets-read-line-without-returning-new-line-char-/n.html?highlight=

... which results in "Page not found". I had to manually change the backslash to the proper encoding:

    http://cboard.cprogramming.com/c-programming/164877-fgets-read-line-without-returning-new-line-char-%5Cn.html?highlight=

Had a problem logging in with the error below:
    Site outage yesterday-cboard_error-jpg

Refreshed couple of times, no luck. Tried the parent site, "cboard.cprogramming.com", still the same error. Resolved after 5 minutes.
