Your friend should do better research into the market.

Okay, but I do know of one cloud solution that businesses seem to like and it largely seems to be content hosting. Giving users the ability to remotely upload and manage systems of files is pretty important. Box.com, for example, has a pretty great API that allows you to do things programmatically so its use can integrate well into currently existing web applications.

No cloud solution is a good solution for anything but the largest and most demanding of internet services. What clouds are is way to force a business into a a vendor lock-in dependency from which they will, just like through a lobster trap, easily walk in but very difficulty walk out. Once in, the way a business, irrespectively of size, has to reposition and reshape itself in order to get out of such third-party dependency is too costly and they will be at the mercy of their service supplier for almost anything concerning their business activity.

Now, a very large business that depends on the type of scalability the cloud requires is more than wise to get on the bandwagon. They have for sure already calculated all the gains from doing so. But any other type of business, even if a big one, does much better by sticking to proven normal hosting solutions. The cloud hasn't yet changed two fundamental factors about the internet; 1. A database can hold millions of records and 2. Servers can answer millions of requests.

I get maybe two dozen requests for help with some sort of programming or design problem every day. Most have more sense than to send me hundreds of lines of code. If they do, I ask them to find the smallest example that exhibits the problem and send me that. Mostly, they then find the error themselves. "Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.

Huh? I thought a cloud was a visible mass of liquid droplets or frozen crystals made of water or various chemicals suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planetary body.

Thanks for the responses. I guess there really are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of cloud solution. We have tried looking into ParachuteTechs and Oracle and will be coming up with a decision to which can be more of a benefit than a liability, after all, investing in these providers cost really a lot.

Unless your friend intends to go bankrupt, Oracle is not an option. A quick search for "Oracle Licensing Practices" should dissuade from opting Oracle. Oracle is made for multi-billion mega corporations that can withstand the inevitable Oracle lawsuit.
