I recommend you look at the feature list. I don't use "Windows" anymore, but I understand a few features have migrated to different version from some intent to differentiate the versions.

From what I hear M$ hasn't yet cleaned up their act on Windows 10 after their monumental failure with Windoze 8/8.1 in trying to convert every goddamn desktop/laptop to a phone. i.e, the cursed tiles interface is still going to be there. Maybe Windows 7 will be last best version ever by M$.

What do you use? Apple? Some flavor of Linux? I'd be interested in hearing from a programmer who has entirely abandoned windows. I've considered doing the same, but there's good amount of software that holds me back - mostly games.

If I had my way, we wouldn't be using Windows at work here, but we have to for some Windows-only software than won't run on Wine.

I guess I lied, or I guess the matter is one of perspective.

I'll have to keep the virtualized "Windows XP" around to support some hardware until an unknown rich uncle I've never met dies and leaves me a replacement.

In any event, I do have hardware that only works with "Windows XP". I don't have "Windows XP" directly installed on any hardware. I also don't use "Wine". I get to use "Windows XP" only through a virtual machine ("Qemu") when I finally got USB forwarding, whatever different appliances called, working. I even get to use difference images so the garbage software doesn't necessarily survive a reboot. Yay! I was very smiley for the success.

You should really look into the approach if your house could otherwise work on "Linux" boxes.

I use "Arch". I used to use "Slackware", but I have rather a lot of Raspberry Pi laying around which has pretty major "Arch" support from the community, and I'm also rather lazy so the shared out-of-box stack is extremely nice.

As for games, I've got arthritis so I can't circle strafe a bee on speed anymore in any event. I prefer console these days for most every sort of game. The sort of computer games I do still play are almost always available on "Linux" environments because "indie". The quirky, charming, pick-up-put-down stuff that you can play and enjoy in small doses while the tests run are the only things I still play on computer.
