Saw this story this morning on Slashdot:

I'll just cut to the chase early this time -- I hate every know-nothing CTO and "techie" who spews nothing but buzz word ridden, nonsensical crap.

When people decided to start calling server-based things "the cloud", it made my ears bleed. Now all I hear about is IoT (internet of things), which seems like it's very similar to cloud computing in the sense that it's already been done for over a decade and it's suddenly a big thing because some idiot decided to label it with a buzz word and talk about it a lot.

I was confused as to why cloud computing was presenting itself as something so new though. It seemed like a logical step since the inception of the internet.

What is the 'step' you are talking about ?
Even the first web server could be considered the 'cloud'.
Distributed databases could be the step, but that too have been for a long time, I think.

Humans are herd animals. The intelligence of the herd is roughly the intelligence of the most vocal member, divided by the square root of the number of vocal members. When one starts to bleat, others want to join in -- that's what herd animals do.

Social media is even worse; it's the substitute for a Homo sapiens sapiens rutting season. (Sapiens; there's a misnomer if I've ever seen one.)

Oh, I meant the way in which it was advertised. It's like literally decades behind. Granted, some trends do take time to catch on though.

I always assume things like this are the product of some branding campaign, probably used to sell an idea to potential investors and whatnot that don't have much knowledge of the technical aspects. Well, I say "branding campaign", but it's really the same thing everytime:

1. Get a catchy nickname that represents a mixture of what the product is and what people think it is.

2. If you are in the 90's, slap an "Extreme" on front of name.

3. Associate the name with "progress", "future", ect.

4. Go and spread the message, if anyone questions the actual product, ask them why they hate "the future".

5. Buy a mansion made of gold :P.

The IT world never really recovered from the dot com. There's this hidden desire that things just went back to how they were before 2000, when a buzzword or a half-baked idea could draw investors like flies are drawn to a nice and warm pile of trash.

The IT world is eventually going to become the laughing stock of technology. In fact, I hear it already has...

I'm slightly disturbed that I have no idea what the things are in the internet of things - it sounds like streaming, searching, and retail. At least IRC and newsgroups will never change dependently on the Web.

I remember when the makers of BeOS abandoned and sold that project in order to pursuit a new business in Internet Appliances way back in the late 90s. How mad was I!

Today it is called Internet of Things. Get a buzzword in the 90s. Did it work? If not, give it a new name. And with IPv6 sloooow adoption as we are experiencing it, it's very likely we will hear again from this in a few years. Taking bets on what the new buzzword will be.
