Are there any good Sci-Fi shows anymore?

Hello all,

So, I remember watching Star Trek TNG when it was still new when I was a kid. Ever since then I've loved science fiction, especially the exploratory / investigative kind. (I hate the new Star Trek movies, but that's probably off point

.)

However I just realized the other day that I hadn't seen a sci-fi show that looked good since BattleStar Galactica. I know the "goodness" of a show is subjective, but that's ok because I just want opinions.

Do they still make good sci-fi shows anymore, are there any anyone here would recommend? Or if there haven't been any good ones, what happened to sci-fi?

The best I can think of that's "current", is Continuum. It has a heavy crimmie element, and the characters feel cheap, but it is, at least, a proper sci-fi.

I wish I liked Dr Who, considering it's legacy. But everytime I watch an episode, it's senseless randomness always deters me.

Whooops! I didn't realize there was a new one. I used to love the old one, I think so anyway. All I remember is a funny looking guy with an afro asking people if they wanted a jelly-baby. I'll check it out next weekend at my parents (they've got Netflix).

I had sort of come up with a theory that since all the normal people started calling themselves nerds, what used to be targeted towards nerds is now targeted toward mainstream. That's what I came up with to explain the new Star Trek/s. They probably weren't bad if you judge them as mainstream action movies(?) .

If that were true, wouldn't we see more sci-fis?

It was until the last two seasons. I watched it until the end, but I was pretty disappointed with the last two, and especially the last season. I did enjoy Warehouse 13 though. I'm quite a fan of Dr Who as well. Yarin was right about one thing. It seems senselessly random at first, but you have to stick with it, and after a few episodes, it starts to coalesce into something you can actually follow. I started watching with Christopher Eccleston, but I want to go back and watch from the very beginning with William Hartnell and watch all the way through the 700+ episodes. They recently found copies of the episodes that were believed to be lost at an old TV station in Africa, so there's a chance that a person could see them all, from beginning to end.

Oh God, I can only watch the new Doctor Who stuff. David Tenant did it better than Matt Smith, in my opinion but then again, Matt Smith had the hotter companion even though she was married. This new assistant or "companion" or w/e they choose to call these girls is pretty good looking too. And the new Doctor seems fantastic. I'm excited for this season.

They don't make good movies or TV anymore. Everything is recycled and/or CGI diarrhea.

Yes, but along with a greater number you also get a shift in the definition of individual brands.

It's sort of like the whole EA thing where they started making their brands more acceptable to the general populace. There were more RPG/ Story-Telling games, with less and less of the unique qualities of those genre's.

On Eureka, I don't think I ever saw the ending to that. I remember watching it in college, but I graduated and sort of forgot about it. I think it was during that time when all the TV shows on had this annoying habit of generating loads of mystery by coming up with all these unanswered questions (like LOST). I can't really remember if Eureka did that sort of thing or not though.

The trouble is that most of the stuff I read or saw when I was a kid back in the 1940s and 1950s have become outdated by modern technology. I remember "The Forbidden Planet" from the 1050s. It's still about the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen!

The point of Sci-Fi is not to be technically accurate or current. The point is entertainment, and a stimulus to our imagination. In that capacity, much of the old Sci-Fi still excels.

I agree with Elkvis, Eureka got weird after the timeline/universe shift. Before that, it and Warehouse 13 were, IMO, okay sci-fi shows. They were both cheesy, and the episodes were quite formulaic, basic procedural crime type of stuff. Okay way to pass the time, but I don't miss either one. Fringe is also in the procedural crime camp, but I enjoyed it much more, as it had IMO better large story arcs, i.e. I felt it moved better across episodes/seasons. They also toyed with time travel and parallel universes*.

I've watched the first 7 or so episodes of Farscape. It's cheesy, but I'm going to try to get through the first season or so, hopefully it will pick up.

The first two seasons of Heroes were pretty good, and I enjoyed both seasons of Alphas.

Battlestar Galactica (the remake, I've yet to watch the original) remains very high on my list (possibly favorite sci-fi series ever), as does TNG. I never watched all the X-files when they were on, and haven't made it back to re-watch them from the beginning, in order, but I quite liked them as well.

I have quite enjoyed the first 3 seasons of Falling skies. I think the first two at least are free streaming on Amazon Prime. It's not exploratory, and frankly fairly light on the science part of sci-fi, except that there are aliens with spiffy tech. Actually, it shares a bit with BSG in that it's post-apocalyptic, about people rebuilding. Not quite as profound perhaps, but still good.

* Time travel and parallel universes seem to be hard to do right in sci-fi. It often feels like the writers run into walls, run out of material, etc, so they pull out the handy time travel/parallel universe tool to give them a chance to start the entire storyline over. Eureka definitely suffered that IMO, as did Fringe to a small degree.
