    How many of you have glasses?

    I am getting glasses next week. While I was at my appointment my eye doctor was telling me about "blue light"(off of new computer screens/phones), which is supposedly bad for your ocular health. She prescribed me a special lens that will help to block some of the blue light from affecting my retina (I am assuming). Do any of you believe that blue light is actually bad for your eyes or is it all BS just to get more money out of you.

    Sounds a bit odd. I don't usually quote wikipedia but all the primary sources are behind paywalls

    Blue-light hazard is defined as the potential for a photochemical induced retinal injury resulting from electromagnetic radiation exposure at wavelengths primarily between 400 - 500 nm. This has not been shown to occur in humans, only inconclusively in some rodent and primate studies.[4] The mechanisms for photochemical induced retinal injury are caused by the absorption of light by photoreceptors in the eye. Under normal conditions when light hits a photoreceptor, the cell bleaches and becomes useless until it has recovered through a metabolic process called the visual cycle.[5][6]

    That is what I was thinking while she was telling me this. I had never heard of it before the other day, but my Dr was telling me how this generation is going to have a high number of ocular problems due to all of the technology.

    Sounds like rubbish to me. Of course, that's coming from someone who happens to do quite a bit of sun-gazing...
    Code:
    #include <cmath>
    #include <complex>
    bool euler_flip(bool value)
    {
        return std::pow
        (
            std::complex<float>(std::exp(1.0)),
            std::complex<float>(0, 1)
            * std::complex<float>(std::atan(1.0)
            *(1 << (value + 2)))
        ).real() < 0;
    }

    I'd use contacts but I'm afraid.

    I put "Yes," but that's mainly because I assume you're asking if we wear corrective lenses. I also wear contacts most of the time... I'll occasionally wear glasses when my allergies are acting up, but primarily I wear contacts. I have been wearing glasses since I was eight and started to wear contacts around 14-15.

    Wow, a lot of people who voted where glasses. I wonder if that says anything about people who program... Maybe glasses really are nerdy.

    I'm not able to respond to the poll - I wore glasses in the past, but do not now.

    I've always been slightly short-sighted. As I've (ahem) matured, however, I became less so and the need for glasses reduced. Technically, I'm still very slightly shortsighted, but it does not affect me (I passed an eye test, and was approved to drive without vision assistance). My vision has been stable for over a decade (only real problems when I am very tired) so it is not certain that I will need glasses in future.
    Right 98% of the time, and don't care about the other 3%.

    If I seem grumpy or unhelpful in reply to you, or tell you you need to demonstrate more effort before you can expect help, it is likely you deserve it. Suck it up, Buttercup, and read this, this, and this before posting again.

    or maybe it's just the fact that nerdy people do things that are harmful to their eyes. reading or staring at a computer screen can cause weakness to develop in the muscles that control focus, because they aren't being used as often as someone whose focus is constantly shifting from near to far.
    What can this strange device be?
    When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
    It's got wires that vibrate and give music
    What can this thing be that I found?

    Since we're speculating, it's also feasible that people who need glasses from a young age are, due to popular belief, perceived by their peers to have nerdish tendencies, which might influence their interests growing up. In effect, popular perception of this sort could create a kind of self-fulling prophecy in that regard.

    Tell that to my genes lol.

    I inherited my shortsightedness and it only really kicked in when I was like 14 and that was waaaaaaaaaay before I even really 'used' a computer.

    there are definitely genetic aspects to it, but the type of (in)activity that I described can exacerbate problems that already exist, and create them when they don't.

    Why are people saying "shortsighted?" Is that the proper term outside of the USA?

    Where I'm from, if you can't see far away you would be "nearsighted." Being "shortsighted" means that your mentally not looking at the whole picture and impulsively reacting to what is presented right in front of you. Essentially the opposite of foresight.

    EDIT: How long does one need to be on the internet before they post queries to answers that can easily be found on Wikipedia?

    Still, it's quite strange to hear someone comfortably claim that they're shortsighted without any self remorse. In fact, in American English... a person being able to diagnose their own shortsightedness is something of a logical paradox.
