In that case, perhaps you should remain silent. You've already chased off one valuable member of this forum with your behavior, you really shouldn't do so again.

cfanatic, not sure if she is going to like it. You know women! If she had this, she would avoid using it, because she would be a bit afraid!

For the history, I bought this one, which comes with 5 years guarantee. I could not find a link with English (I think that the site should provide me the English version of this too, but it didn't or at least, it hid it too much!).

Matticus is right. If you do not have really anything to say (nothing to the point), then you should remain silent. (thanks for the post)

Nor does it mean that is not what he meant. I would wager only the kind of person who makes inappropriate mom jokes would be insensitive enough to imply the mentally handicapped meaning .

Like the irrelevant insults you leveled at std10093's mom? Kettle, meet pot.

Nowadays, outside of the medical world, cretin is almost exclusively used as a general term for idiot, most people don't know it refers to a disorder. Depending on which dictionary you want to use, the general sense of "idiot", regardless of any mental or physical disability, is either definition 1 or 2 (cretin: definition of cretin in Oxford dictionary (British & World English) and Cretin - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary -- not sure where phantom found one with 3 definitions). Note, the M-W dictionary actually specifically mentions vulgar and insensitive. Since gemera is (I think) not a native English speaker, it is likely he is more familiar with the slang (non-medical) meaning. Furthermore, although the adjectival form "cretinous" is almost exclusively used to describe somebody afflicted with cretinism, it was your "stuff", i.e. your "joke", that he called cretinous. Clearly the medical definition couldn't apply, as a comment on a web forum can't suffer from pre-natal hypothyroidism, hence he called your comment "vulgar and insensitive", which is quite fair.

If you're really so miffed by words that have such histories, consider taking the following out of your vocabulary: dumb, idiot, imbecile, moron, spastic (spas), lunatic, cretin, retard, and I'm sure there's more. And make sure you educate all violators, as you are doing here.

Oh, and add "lame" to that list. So why do you get to play the "that's not what I meant" card with your handicapped insult, but gemera doesn't?

Also, etymologically, the origin of the word comes from the French for "Christian" reminding us that, while handicapped, they are still human beings. Of course, the word gay used to just mean happy...words change in living languages like English.

Well, std10093 told you he didn't care for your "mom" comments in post #4. You made another one, and got called on it. That's your bad. For all you know, std10093's mom passed away, or is terminally ill, and your comment may have been extra insensitive.

I like poking a little fun here and there, and am happy to be the butt of jokes from time to time. Just keep it relevant to the forum, and within reasonable bounds given how well you know (or don't know) somebody.
EDIT: by which I mean, you don't know std10093 or his personal and family life, so best leave such jokes out. Now, if you want to poke fun at his indentation, or obsession with a particular coding practice, that's probably fair game (as long as you're not mean about it).

Of course he/she has no clue about me! No one that knows me has ever said such a thing...and nor shall I of course!

The joke and the insults have an obscure border, when one has not much humor.

MutantJohn, may have not much humor. As say "may", because he may posted his insult in a bad moment and in general be a good guy.

Joking is a must in our lives, it make us laugh. But it is obvious enough, that MutantJohn's attempt was a disaster. It's my mother. How much more should I say to make you understand how "holy" is this person for me? For you, its just another mother. For me, its my one and only lovely mother. I do not know what's happening in your country, but in mine, insulting the other guy's mother, means that you are starting a fight, or something like this. You saw, that I ignored your mistake more than once, but you kept it going, until the other members showed up.

I think that at this point you understood how wrong you are and if a post is made by you now, I want to believe that it is one laconic apologize post to me. Of course you are free not to apologize, but if so, better do not post.

What you said made me feel very bad. What's the problem here? That I told my story as it is, considering that I am talking to "people I know" or/and people that love the same "things" with me or/and people from the same science field or/and almost friends or/and friends, rather than posting a laconic, cold answer. I love this forum, because it helped me much and in return I help back as much as I can (and it was by a small moment that I decided to get along with this forum, or to be exact, that this forum made me to come along!).

I want to believe, that he will follow one of the basics of the forum: Learn from your mistakes. We help people to spot their mistakes and fix them. This is something vital in our science (and in general maybe), because this procedure can make us better. So, MutantJohn, I hope you understood your big mistake here and do such a thing never again, not only in the forum, but in your life too, because a forum can be a mirror of our life, if we want.

If I was in my first steps in the forum idea, I am almost sure I would have errupted and fight you back with all my forces (preferrably, my airforce, since I love aircrafts). I may have done this sometimes in this forum, or have witnessed others do, I do not remember. I learnt that this is no good and managed to keep myself pretty calm.

Oh, and a last thing. Almost everything is relevant. What for one means A, for another means B. As humans, we have many things in common, in the way we see things. But, since we are in an international forum, you have to think twice before saying something non-scientific. People from different countires/cultures/religion are more likely to see some things completely different than you. As I said before, maybe in your country, insulting the mother of others is not as bad as in my. Here, insulting the mother, is very very bad!

Let me give you an example of the relevant thing I mentioned above. I clearly remember my father narrating my US choppers fly above the croud (of the local people) in some Eastern country. Maybe Iraq, or Pakistan. The soldiers, sit on the floor of the chopper, having their legs outside of it. As a result, their sole of their shoes, are pointing directly to the croud. For the soldiers, and for me for example, this is ok. For the people there however, if someone points the sole of its shoe to you, this means a big insult ( I do not know why ), so the croud was, of course, very frustrated after the fly-bies of the choppers. Finally, when the army understood that, the would get their legs inside the chopper (when needed, or always, I do not know).
Rumor or truth, it doesn't matter, as one can easily see the point of the relevantly I said before.

I get it. It was my attitude in correcting the post calling me a cretin. I mean, it's fair enough to call me something bad because I am entirely aware it was inappropriate. I just felt like there were better words he could've chosen but there is indeed the possibility that English is not his native language and that would be even more demeaning. I really don't want to make fun of someone for learning a new language, that's for sure. So I apologize for that. Actually, I wasn't even making fun of, I was just trying to be more exact in the description of my trolling but I feel this is a bad road to go down. This is a good time to interject, this isn't a specific programming forum. This is random bull corner over here. I would never post like this on the C++, C, tech boards. And I'm a giant troll. Give me a keyboard and the internet and I have a hoot tryin' to rustle someone's jimmies. Why? Because it makes me giggle. Granted, maybe the years of DotA have skewed my interactions online...

Now as for you, std, I do apologize. Largely because if you are genuinely offended, that was not my intent. It is the mark of a poor entertainer if he is not entertaining but hurtful. So I do hope you believe me when I say that I will take this to heart because I don't mean genuine harm. I can't actually shake your hand or a buy you a beer or anything because, you know, distance and all that but I will remember this. And if you're ever in California, hit me up and I can show you the power of hoppy beer.

Not gonna lie though, I actually did not think a your-mom joke would be that insulting. Especially on the internet. I mean, have you been on the internet before? A your-mom joke is, like, the oldest thing around so I wasn't expecting it to do any harm. It's largely uninspired and took about a brain cell of thought to create.

But you're Greek, right? Maybe it's an American tradition. Kids on the schoolyard have your-mama joke stand-offs where two contestants try to come up with the best your-mama jokes. When I grew up, I've been told your-mama jokes and I've told them back. It's a primitive equivalent of rap battling where you make fun of the other person and try to trounce them lyrically but the idea is, nothing said is ever to be taken personally or as a serious insult.

Look at this reddit page : Best yo mama joke ever ? : AskReddit

And I was trying to find a video clip of the show Tosh.0 hosted by comedian Daniel Tosh in which he holds an open poll for who should win some comedy award or something and the overwhelming result was Daniel's mom so he congratulates his mom on-air and says, "There you go, Mom. Never knew you were so popular." But he has a good sense of humor about it because, well, people on the internet are idiots (not excluding myself).

So maybe it is an American thing to insult other people's mom's but it was never personal, std.

If I showed you a lack of respect then know that I do respect you and that's why I felt comfortable in making such remarks. I felt comfortable enough to try and rib you a bit but I guess it was excessive and not very funny. If you feel like I did disrespect you then I do apologize and I will be more careful in the future.

Now, I hope we can put this behind us.

Either way, you guys react to a mom joke like a... Huh... I don't actually have anything clever to say.
    O_o

I was reacting towards a person with a poor enough sense of humor to flail around the /same/ "mom's are sexual" joke three times only to get miffed over potentially offensive, historical slang.

    @ mutant

You've taken what I said very, very, very personally, and are asking others not to take what you say personally? Something to bear in mind.

And if you look at what I posted - I referred to your specific behaviour - NOT you personally.

There are people of all ages and backgrounds and sexes here - would you be happy for your own mother to read your posts here?

But hey, you made a mistake, enuff said.

I actually didn't get upset by what you said. I was just trying to point out there were more apt terms than the one you selected.

I'm really curious if you ever forgive personal grudges. Is it even really a grudge, or do you just enjoy remembering every time you crossed someone? It is really a waste of your time.

How did a thread about USB sticks end up being about mommas?

    Oh well...

Yo momma is so fat, I took a picture of her last Christmas and it's still printing.

Yo mamma is so ugly when she tried to join an ugly contest they said, "Sorry, no professionals."

Yo mama so fat she left the house in high heels and when she came back she had on flip flops.

Yo mama so fat she sat on an iPhone and turned it into an iPad

Yo Momma so fat, I bumped into her and said "Sorry, my mistake." And she said "Did you just say steak?!"

Yo mama so fat that when she fell down the stairs, I wasn't laughing but the stairs were cracking up.

    Internet is the answer here.
