While doing an assignment for the uni, I came across a question about personal data. However, I do not recall having heard any incidence with personal data abuse from my family and friends.
Have you? Or do you have any story who made you feel very happy for been protected by the 'bad people'?

I mean like trusting your data in someone and there are not safe in there... Like stealing your data...
For example, I remember one case this morning. One guy, for demonstration purposes, made an SQL injection on the database of some university and got access at the data of all the students.

Hmm... well my outlook is this. What's far more important is what you can do after the information gets out; for example, credit card identity theft usually means that the perpetrator will buy stupid things that you don't buy. VISA particularly is very good at watching for fraud and they will call you if they detect something odd. If your social security number gets out, you need to go to Identity theft is a crime: Resources from the Government to learn what to do next. When you deal with companies, don't be afraid to ask or look into how they protect your info, and what their response is when the worst happens. Some track records are better than others. It's a customer's responsibility to evaluate companies, it's a citizen's responsibility to protect their papers, it's a bank's responsibility to legally protect a customer's deposits, and so on. Protecting info is a team effort.
quite apart from the actual threat of being able to do anything damaging with the data - to the person that data concerns - There is also the principle of it - which can and will severely harm the business handling said data if it were leaked.. left on a tube train in a laptop...etc. The company i work for is intensley paranoid about such things - Routinely accessing financial information and personal data that reveals all about a person's 'status' here in the UK is seen as a high trust endeavour. i really could not do too much with the information without a load of hassle, and i have no interest in doing so, but i still have to qualify a load of paperwork whenever i access those systems -sometimes i joke with the supermastercontroller when he asks 'what is this request for access to system xyzCorp about?' - i say stuff like ' oh i just want to download all the data and sell to my highest bidder. ' - i still get the access haha - Fact is tho that just having a million valid email addresses is probably more valuable than a million bank account numbers, certainly more useful in my book. I remember i got super-paranoid once when i had been working on a project from home, with live data.. and realised ages after, when i no longer worked for the hiring company, that i still had masses of the data on my personal drive, i suddenly got creeped out thinking the men in black were coming and nuked the lot...
