Not to mention that modern virtual machine applications allow you to boot real partitions as a virtual disk so you don't even have to reboot in order to access any OS you choose to install. These days it's never a bad idea to give yourself a few options.

That said, if we're talking about forking over cash for both a Windows 7 and Windows 8 license, then perhaps you should consider one before you buy. You might not use both that often.

I forgot we don't all have MSDN accounts....I'm spoiled. And VirtualMachines are great, good suggestion.

A lot of people can tell you specifics on Win8 or even opinions, but they will not necessarily reflect your own.
So again, try both, and stick with the one that suits you best.
Win 8 is generally different in some aspects and it will require some time for adjustment or finding ways around the new stuff.

I have developed the theory that the best strategy is to get every other release in Windows. Windows 98 were good, windows millennium were bad, windows XP were good, windows vista were bad, windows 7 are good, windows 8....

There is not "step backward" in MS versions. You cannot keep an old MS OS, eventually it will be incompatible or too slow etc etc. The key question is "when" you should switch. I believe that since Windows 8 is a different strategy of MS and it will get its love and hate, in the end MS will learn from all the reviews and customer feedback, will get more what the market wants and adjust on its new release. Big changes need time, having this one-for-all OS is a brave (or stupid) step forward that is for sure just the start. So I would be quite confident to say that sticking with Win7 and letting Win8 take its round and wait for the next release is the sound choice. Changing OS is also a big pain for enterprises, since Win8 doesn't offer so much for them it is unlikely that companies (biggest MS customer) will change their systems or even take a risk for something new. That implies that MS will keep supporting Win7 and developers will also as well and eventually will offer something that everyone will like.

On the other hand, if you haven't used Win7 in the past and if you trust that Win8 will be compatible with Win7 programs and won't run slower, why not go with the new stuff? You learn something that not everyone will jump in to learn. There will definitely be some new stuff coming in that are worth it. Eventually there will be a new release that everybody will jump in to get hold of and you can bet the interface will be more like Win8 than Win7. Be brave man

C_ntua thanks for writing all this for me..Actually the history of ms systems was a clever input

I was nearly convinced to stick to win7,and now i am a fully convinced (unless they don't behave as expected). Also who knows,by the time i return to Greece,ms will have come up with win9 (here i use mac)

C_ntua are you greek? <--the intention was this to be smaller letters : EDIT

I would go with Windows 7 64-bit. It is solid as a rock and performs quite well. The memory management it has absolutely runs circles around previous OS's. Some of the menus and control panels have too much clutter on them but overall it is an awesome OS. Personally, I am skipping Windows 8 and by the time everyone decides they like or dislike it....the next iteration of Windows will be around the corner. Given that Microsoft has been producing a new OS version every 2 to 4 years you won't have to wait long for the next one. Some of the urgency in the timeline between XP and 7 is because Vista was so utterly terrible they had to do something. I cannot explain the urgency between W7 and W8 except that perhaps Microsoft is tired of getting their arse kicked in the mobile market. It is my opinion W8 will not do much to remedy that issue.
