    TV or Monitor?

What I would like is a nice big led monitor (say 40") specifically to watch movies from a connected computer. So no actual tv receiver or anything else needed. Do they make monitors for this purpose or basically you need to go with a TV? Maybe a really silly question, my train of thought is that I just need the monitor and nothing else from a good tv

I had to replace a dead LCD monitor urgently at one point and ended up buying a small TV. I'd just go with the TV at that size. My consumer experience: If it wasn't for the remote I'm sure I could not tell you what the difference between the two devices is without looking inside.

Unfortunately all they make for computers are crappy LCD monitors. I have not found any LED or even DLP monitors. I would die to get a CRT back but I do not believe Samsung makes their CRT anymore. After 10 years of buying into the lie that LCD is better I am completely fed up with them. They outright suck. Even high end 120Hz LCDs cannot hold a candle to a simple 120Hz CRT with no bells and whistles. The colors on LCDs are terrible and they turn any kind of motion into a blurry mishmash of garbage. The only thing LCD's have going for them is weight and cost to produce. They are not superior tech and never will be.

Have we moved forwards? I would say two or three steps back.

They do, but they are expensive as heck.
Go for a TV with Full HD, I'd say.

You are pretty much stuck with just a television.

If they made a decent 40" "LED" monitor for a computer it would be prohibitively expensive.

    *shrug*

Unless you are rich in which case I think it is time I confess my fondness for you and also mention that I'm in the market for a new monitor as well.

I have not found any LED or even DLP monitors.
You aren't wrong, but I've had my desktop connected to my "LED" television for a while and it worked pretty well for most stuff.

You couldn't program on it, but at that size you'd probably go blind trying to develop on it.

Even high end 120Hz LCDs cannot hold a candle to a simple 120Hz CRT with no bells and whistles.
I had a 24" (22"?) Samsung that was simply amazing. The color control was so finely grained! It was so freaking sweat!

The largest monitor I'm aware of is a 36" Eizo with a 4096 x 2160 resolution, but it's really expensive. You should be able to go with a TV, but you'll get much lower resolution than a dedicated monitor. For a monitor an IPS panel with LED backlight is what I would shoot for, they are more expensive though.

There are some cheaper IPS panels out there these days that aren't too expensive. They're great for computer stuff, but you can't beat a television for movies or even certain types of gaming. I've had a dedicated HTPC for years now and I also have a desktop for software development and graphics design.

I can tell you this... watching movies is way better on a computer monitor than trying to program on a 55" LED TV that's 10 feet away from you. I don't care what you do with the display settings, it's just uncomfortable.

Put the TV a half to a meter away from you. Perfect for programming and movies. Done it for years. It's awesome.
