    Question Tater banned?

Sorry for posting this, I know this is not appreciated in most forums... but I haven't been around for a while and I just noticed that CommonTater is banned. Since I almost always liked his posts, I'm a bit curious what happened.

There was an argument revolving around possible solutions to a technical problem.

As people who were discussing various possibilities continued to argue with his experience which flew in the face of evidence he got more and more aggressive and insulting.

Eventually he would make a post he knew would get him banned (He even said so in the post.) by typing carefully to bypass the forum filters so he could be intentionally vulgar and insulting to everyone who disagreed with him in the relevant thread.

    *shrug*

It probably wouldn't have been an issue had he not intentionally posted something quite so offensive that he knew was against the forums policy.

I feel quite certain the administrator in question would have let it go if he'd just ranted without bypassing the filter.

I'm actually kind of curious to. I do remember at one point, he asked to be banned, but he was actively posting for a while afterwards. Looking through his latest posts, I don't see anything he said that breaks the rules, or would offend a mod. I'm in the dark too.

He would not admit that someone who disagreed with him was possibly right.

IIRC, it was the laptop battery charging debate that resulted in him being banned; but, it might have been another debate.

IIRC, Tater was saying his personal experience was one way the other person was posting links saying the other way.

Didn't know about that. I assume it was deleted.

Well, you wouldn't. If they hadn't been worth removing he wouldn't have been banned.

The administrator in question or some other moderator removed the relevant couple of posts.

Didn't know about that. I assume it was deleted.
Yeah, well, the moderators here are pretty lenient about enforcing rules.

About the only thing I see consistently moderated are posts about cracking.

I wondered the same thing when I came back from my absence. I tried to look up his latest posts to see what happened, but didn't see anything that would explain it. I also assumed such posts were deleted.

I'm afraid he was banned for the reasons phantomap gave, but this was the last straw following numerous warnings. The last post was deleted as it had personal insults and obscenities.

And advertising spam and duplicated posts. It is easy to be consistent for clear cut stuff.

As a moderator there is not much to do around here which is good and how it should be. If you calculate the percentage of posts that require moderation vs those that do not you will find that most fall into the 'do not require moderation' category.

I didn't see the particular posts that led to Tater's banning, but I can't say I'm surprised.

Tater contributed some interesting and worthwhile discussion that I'm sure will be missed. Unfortunately he showed a tendency to escalate his comments when anyone disagreed with him. He showed a particularly low tolerance for alternative points of view, even in the face of evidence or reasoned argument. This is a technical forum, where disagreements and alternative viewpoints are par for the course, so I thought - hoping I would be wrong - that he would eventually overdo it.

The moderators here each have their individual styles, and sometimes I might disagree or quibble about some aspects of what they do, but overall I think they do a pretty good job. They are also fortunate that their workload is not that high - even the most obstreperous members usually show self-restraint.
Right 98% of the time, and don't care about the other 3%.

If I seem grumpy or unhelpful in reply to you, or tell you you need to demonstrate more effort before you can expect help, it is likely you deserve it. Suck it up, Buttercup, and read this, this, and this before posting again.

I fear my comment may have been misinterpreted.

I was saying that even as lack as the moderators are he was still banned.

Or to put it another way, his behavior became aggressive and insulting enough that he was banned despite the largely lenient attitude of the moderators.
