    Toronto, King Street

Anyone who knows the area (that's the King Street of Spadina Av, not the King Street near Pelmo Park) that can recommend me a decent hotel in a 15 minute walk radius of the entertainment district?

I have a few friends who are going to attend the TIFF this year (they actually brought in a movie to the festival) and they are having trouble booking hotel rooms nearby that aren't asking them for an arm and a leg. They've been asked as much as 400 Euros (570 CAD) a night! Alternative lodging facilities would do too, as long as they aren't too shady.

I know Toronto fairly well, but have never payed attention to hotels in the area.

Best bet, in this modern age... Google Street View.... Take a walk around the neighborhood and gather names, look them up on the web to get their rates...

    Google Maps

The Hyatt Regency is nice but a bit pricey...

I know the area well too, and I don't think there is such a thing as an affordable hotel in downtown Toronto.

What you should do is find a hotel walking distance to the subway line. Look further north like Yonge & Sheppard, or east/west down the bloor line.

I don't know what your friend's standards are or what websites they can book from out in Portugal, but Hotels.com has rooms available at the Hilton Garden Inn (about a block and a half away from TIFF or their main office, at least) for around $260 / night on the dates of the festival. If they don't mind doing two per room, that's not terrible per person considering that they're probably paying a grand or more for the flight. While I haven't been to this one, Hilton Garden Inns are usually quite nice hotels... there are definitely cheaper available if your friends are comfortable staying in a Howard Johnson or something.

I get the impression these are booking fast, so I might jump on a quality hotel if it seems even reasonable.

Indeed. I did notice on the map there's a subway station a mere 500 meters from the TIFF Bell. I was already looking it up further north. Thanks.

$260, and close, seems about right for these folks. They are 5 and won't mind sharing rooms. That's 3 rooms. They are going to stay 12 days. So you can see how $570 x 3, per night, would weight on them.

As for booking, I advised them to do it over the phone. My own personal experience with web based booking as been all but stellar over the years. Often you miss out on price opportunities and other conditions that pop up as you speak directly with someone. Other times, the websites don't correctly reflect availability or (although that shouldn't matter here) room locations.

    ...

Thanks all. I think I can make them a list now.
