    Laptop recommendation

I'm getting a laptop soon, it will be my first one so I have no clue on what brands are the best and which ones I should avoid (I'm avoiding all HP products since they tend to have a high defective rate).

I'll be using it primarily for school with no high-end gaming in mind so I'm not looking for anything too fancy or expensive. I just want something reliable and decent.

My budget is around 1k american bucks.

I've always had very good luck with Toshiba...

However I wouldn't recommend you spend a grand on a laptop that's going to get knocked around in backpacks and quite likely stolen by a schoolmate... You can get decent machines for under $400 new if you shop carefully.

Yeah, well, my budget is that high because the prices in my country are ridiculous. I could buy the laptop in Canada, although I'm kinda disappointed that there's a disparity in prices between the US and Canada stores like best buy..

Have you looked at just ordering online and having it shipped to you then? That should bypass your issues.

That's a strange response. Even if you do have a high budget, why not get as cheap as you can afford?
Anyway, if your looking to deliberately buy something expensive, something like this would be cool. :-)

You could encrypt the drive, and get lojack so the police can find it.

Gees... I can get a brand new 15" Toshiba with AMD processor in Canada (where I live) for under $400.00 very easily.

Hewlet Packard never has been, isn't and never will be "cool".

I would have to say, that one of the few things that have stayed constant over the years has been....avoid HP for anything but printers.

When getting a computer, usually one picks an appropriate category first. There are usually 3 (4) categories available:

    - Netbook: Extremely weak (usually single core), good battery life (8+ hours), cheap.
    - Laptop: Beasts with lots of computing power (usually dual or quad core), poor battery life (1-3 hours).
    - Ultra portable: Plenty of computing power (usually dual core), good battery life depending on what you do (6-8 hours surfing the web, for example), same price as laptops.
    - The 4th category are gaming laptops, which I assume you don't want/need.

You can hardly go wrong with a Lenovo. You are looking at a ThinkPad and one of the T Series.

Lenovo have been annoying me more and more recently.

I want to buy an 11 inch Thinkpad. The money is waiting. Lenovo came out with the X120e, which was just the job. Low power, Trackpoint, hardware virtualization, Radeon graphics (AMD Fusion)... the catch? Not available in the UK. They preferred to try to sell me the Edge 11, which is Intel Core i3-based and stylistically pants.

Now they've just come out with the X121e, in Europe as well this time, with a choice of AMD or Intel processors. So what's the problem? It has rounded corners! It's all plasticky! It's an IdeaPad with a Trackpoint grafted onto it for over £300!!!

Is there something that I need to do to stop the rot?

I faced a lot of that when I bought from them. At the time I just caved in and had it sent to me overseas. Wasn't happy either.
... and I don't have local support either. UK is the closest.
