I've always had very good luck with Toshiba...

However I wouldn't recommend you spend a grand on a laptop that's going to get knocked around in backpacks and quite likely stolen by a schoolmate... You can get decent machines for under $400 new if you shop carefully.

You could encrypt the drive, and get lojack so the police can find it.
