Threads that won't die and Flaming

Is it just me, or does there seem to be an increase in flaming and random threads that just won't seem to die in the programming forums lately? I know I have only recently come back to this board from a long time ago so maybe I missed a shift in paradigm; but it just seems to occur more frequently anymore.

Anyone else notice this or am I just loosing my mind?

Are we flaming the people who make the threads that won't die?

    Examples please!
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Our friend with his language analyzer has been my favorite soap opera of late. Also it would appear many of our new friends don't take to correction to readily.

These are social changes, that are happening everywhere, not just here...

The other day I was behind a group of teenagers waiting for the "walk" signal at a crosswalk. Their conversation was pretty darned strange to me. At their age, my friends and I used to talk about music, cars, girls and booze... these kids were on about world politics (the mess in Libya) and they spoke to each other in terms that would have gotten your lights punched out only a few years ago (although in amicable tones). For them calling one another "idiot" and "mother___r" was perfectly normal conversation...

It's the "information age" training people not to care about other people's feelings, to just say what's on your mind... And yes it gets in here too.

Personally, I don't see much point in babysitting people who are choosing a very complex and challenging career. If they're not up to the task they should find that out very early... and speaking with them in direct (but helpful) terms is certainly part of that.

I think there might be a misunderstanding; I'm not complaining at all. I was just noticing a trend and decided to post about. I certaintly do not get my panties in a bunch over online comments nor do I want a series of "you're getting there" helpers.

@CommonTater-You make some very good points and I guess I should have just concluded that myself. This is my first foray back into the forum world after some time and it just initially seemed odd to me.

Andrew... No worries. I didn't think you were complaining, but you did seem a tad bewildered.

I've been on and off forums as long as there have been forums (starting in FidoNet BBSs!) and I've watched as the intial courtesy and grace of most conversations has slowly given way to direct and often blunt conversation. I can certainly see how it would be far more apparent to you after an interregnum away from it all. Sadly, in order to talk to "the new order" one must adopt the old adage... "When in Rome, do as the Romans" and it isn't always pretty.

Yeah, sorry about that, I really can't help myself sometimes -- altho I honestly don't like to argue, I like even less some of the utter crap that gets spouted by people who should know better, and need to be told so at length regularly.

Good. Hopefully this is all settled then.

As for my flaming comment it was directed towards the responses from the OPs when they got corrected. I come from an engineering community where if you were new and told "You're wrong" or even "Hey stupid" by someone with clearly more knowledge than you the reply wouldn't be "What do you mean I don't know what I am talking about..." etc.

Specifically, I read a post where the OPs response was, "What do you mean I don't know C?". When it was quite evident he didn't.

    Welcome to the new reality...

In my career (electronics tech) I found it constantly necessary to flip between Teacher and Student... In a field so complex there is no hope of knowing everything. Programming has become even more complex so anyone not able to make that flip is doomed to either learn it fast or make a rather abrupt career change... Asking questions then arguing with the answers doesn't cut it in any technical field.

Of course there's also the unfortunate assumption many of us make when new names appear. It is sometimes difficult to separate "new here" from "new to coding" and I'm guessing we've misfired on that one more than once.

Haha...perhaps or maybe just suggest some sort of team activity prior to posting. Thanks for the eloquent rephrase of my flaming point CommonTater.

Btw, how do you guys do the specific quote tags that refer to the comment in the thread? The quote tags don't seem to do it.

Use the reply with quote link to find out how.

If they do, I ask them to find the smallest example that exhibits the problem and send me that. Mostly, they then find the error themselves. "Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.
