Alright, who decided it would be a good idea to get a new version of the forum software? In the last few days the forums have gone downhill. It has some check now that it decides to not let you post something that you've edited out of another post.

"You have posted the same thing in another post in the last five minutes!"

No I haven't, I edited that out. The post you are talking about doesn't have that!

"Well why are you trying to post that in a new post when you edited it out of an old one?"

Because you're all broken now, and half the time I hit new post, you think I'm editing the one above mine, because you apparently don't like people posting two consecutive posts now! What's your problem anyway?

    "What do you mean?"

Oh I don't know, how about yesterday when I hit the post button, and instead of posting my post once, you posted the post twice in the same post?

"What do you mean by that?
What do you mean by that?"

THAT! That's what I mean by that!

"Honestly I have no idea what you're talking about!"

I think you need to lay off the drugs, forum software.

"You're the one talking to the forum software!"

That's not the point! I can't post my post for another four minutes, you jackass!

"I guess you shouldn't have edited that post."

I wouldn't have needed to edit that post if you weren't on crack!

    "What do you mean?"

    Really? This again?

Seriously, I just tried it again. I have a post in a thread telling a dude to use code tags. He did, so I went to add a new post telling him of what he should do next. When I hit "Post Quick Reply", it adds my new post on to the end of my old post.

    I hate you Forum Software!

Show some respect; Charlie Sheen worked hard on this new software.

It won't even let me post anymore!

No matter what I type it just posts "It won't even let me post anymore!"
If you understand what you're doing, you're not learning anything.

Posting a reply is now painfully slow. I mean minutes.

A while back, Salem was having some issues with double posts, and to try and fix it, I added a vBulletin mod that auto-merges posts made within the same time period and checks for duplicate posts. It didn't fix his problem, unfortunately, but I left it in place because it would prevent bumping old posts/accidental duplicates and multiple sequential posts.

I don't feel strongly about keeping it, so if it's causing problems or if folks don't like the functionality, I'm happy to remove it.

@Adak: I'm not sure why this would be. Is it happening right now? (It took me only a few moments to post this.)

I don't know about everyone else, but I've already gotten used to the bizarre behavior.

It's alright. It was just odd to see happen. I would rather see something in place that locks threads that are over X days old so people can't bump them. Nothing quite like having a 5 year old thread bumped with:

"I have this problem too what did you do!?"

It happened at 15:26 hours, today. I clicked on the post button, then it wouldn't finish right away. So I opened up another browser window, went to another site and read a post, then checked on an on-line chess tournament game in progress, then came back - and it still had not finished posting.

Edit: this post went through OK - not really fast, but OK.

FWIW ... there is a Minstry of War ad showing up in the ad banner at the top of each page that locks my browser up for several seconds while it loads... I tried grabbing the url but right clicking it just brings up the Flash context menu.

The thing takes forever to load but doesn't do anything special...

Usually around this time of night the server performs some nightly backup activities that tend to slow things down (I just checked and saw a gzip process running a few minutes ago). A multiminute connect is pretty darn unusual though. It's tough to troubleshoot this kind of issue after-the-fact since it's often caused by some short-running, high-CPU process or a temporary uptick in the number of open DB connections, but if you see it again, I'd like to know. I may be able to correlate multiple events in a Apache access log.
