    What's not to like?

So, a quick poll to see whether you like the new "likes" feature.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Nope. Been a few years already and the "like button" has disseminated through the web like a plague and I still can't understand its use. The idea that on sites like this, it exists to promote good answers doesn't sit with me. Someone whose incapable of judging a good answer from a bad one will still click the like button based on some other principle only meaningful to them (usually the dangerous principle in programming that goes by "but it solved my problem").

I also don't subscribe to the social bandwagon effect these things tend to promote, for which reason you'll never see my clicking the like button.

I had a sleepless night. I can't deal at this point with seemingly valid, yet logic defying paradoxes ;p

Bad excuse for a popularity contest... not much more.

People will click like because "I like the guy who wrote this" or "I liked his joke" or "I like his avatar"... NOT because the post itself has any merrit.

The opposite will also happen. On posts with a high degree of merrit people will not click the button because they don't much like the writer or there were spelling mistakes, or they don't like his avatar.

In the end it will have little or nothing to do with the quality of assistance or message content.

From the forums and sites that I've seen that use a "like" button or a similar concept (for example, metafilter's "favorite" button), I've seen very little 'abuse' based on typos or avatars or personal preference for a particular poster. On the other hand, for longer threads with a lot of replies, it can help readers quickly hone in on the best/most useful answers without having to go through everything that has been posted. I've certainly used similar systems on other sites to hone in on best answers/quality comments.

As I mentioned in another thread, it also has far fewer issues and negatives than the reputation system did. It can't be used to provide anonymous, negative feedback directed at an individual over a period if time. On the other hand, it can be used to provide specific, public, positive feedback to someone who wrote something worthwhile. I think that's a good thing.

Fear not, I'll give it a good go... I've already "liked" a few things...

But "Negative Nelle" that I can be at times, I can also see where it might be abused.

EDIT... I see from the other thread this is per post, not per person...
which pretty much kills the popularity contest aspect of it.

Glad to hear--I'm certainly interested in seeing if this becomes useful

I think and hope so too. If people use it to give a small kudos for someone who did a good job writing a specific post, and it helps that post stand out a little bit and makes the original author know that other folks really liked their work, then I will feel good about it.

Hmmm. I think this might have potential.
    At least, it looks fun.

I didn't even notice the "Like" feature until I read this post.

Same here. Honestly, I can't picture myself ever using it.

I like the rep system we had many moons ago. This is somewhat a middle ground but I am unsure of the likability of this feature. I do like that there is not an unlike button.
