Yes, the notification clears, but i'm still stuck with meltdown's handywork on the main list.

Ummmm... Mario, just in case you haven't noticed the entire Forum concept is predicated upon talking to total strangers.

edit : One last thought on the topic... Perhaps the "Like" flag on a message should expire automatically after, say, 48 hours...

Looks like a half thought out implementation to say the least. The easiest dodgy decision to spot is the list of liked posts not being sorted by number of likes. Also, why aren't the Like/Share buttons on the row with the Quote button instead of on their own row, leaving that daft looking gap between the end of the post and the signature.

Instead of restricting the number of likes objectively, why not make it moderator subjective and impose harsh penalties... if you choose to abuse the like feature and just "like" everything in order to spam, the result is an instant ban.

Almost all good things can be abused... and for me, I think this is a good thing if used properly. Back when I actually used to post on the programming forums, I couldn't count the number of times in a day that I would want to answer someone's question only to find that someone else (usually Prelude at the time) would get to it first. It would have certainly made me feel a lot better if I could make my mark by liking the correct answers post rather than ignoring further input and providing the OP no additional assurance on what I believe to be the correct answer. At the same time... how many times a day does someone answer a programming question with bad practice and someone has to correct them. Wouldn't it be more beneficial for people to be allowed to dislike the bad practice answer and like the response that corrects it?

I may be speaking out of turn here but I believe that feature is being tested, this very moment.

A bipolar scoring system merely doubles the chance for abuses. And as we've already seen there is always some turd out there just waiting to make a mess of things.

That's actually a good point you have there. But that could also be solved with a SOLVED button.

After 20 years or so of being online I just know from experience that any feature that can be understood as a vehicle for social exploitation, will be be used as a vehicle for social exploitation. Call me cynic...

    O_o

Yes. I do like that, but how did you know? Inglip!?

Seriously though, a click of the "scroll lock" feature on my mouse apparently counts in Firefox. This has nothing to do with the forum software, but fairly warned, be ye and all that.

In seriousness, I don't think it's that bad. Of course it could get abused, but then again, so can (and often do) forums all together! In these cases, it seems that the problems arise from the community in general, not the features they have. And of course everyone's going to sarcastically abuse the system on an introducing thread like "Do you like this feature?".

In "seriousness" [sic]... Anyone who pulled a stunt like our ?_? buddy pulled in real life would probably find himself out back the woodshed getting an attitude adjustment.

There is something seriously wrong with a world where the first reaction is destructive... and even moreso when that action is actively condoned as normal behavior.

IOW... stop being such a CHILD.

Not to whine, but if possible, I think the likes indicator would look better if it were in the grey box to the left, rather than in between posts. (They're not actually in between, but they have the effect of being so.)
