So... I tried three different sets of 8gb ram. The one I purchased from newegg, a 1066 2x4gb set from Corsair, and a 2x4gb set from Patriot.

All did not work. So I called Toshiba and apparently the only ram which is compatible is ram from Toshiba, which you can order overpriced from toshiba direct.

I am throughly ........ed and will never buy a toshiba laptop ever again and I wouldn't if I were you either.

It may sound a bit rude of me to say this, but you have only yourself to blame. It's really not wise to just go off and buy a RAM upgrade for any system (laptop or not) without being fully aware of your board limitations and requirements. That Toshiba only allows their own modules, is annoying for sure, but not surprising. I'm pretty sure the decision to lock on hardware upgrades is certainly not an exclusive of the Toshiba brand.

I suppose I could have called them beforehand, yes. I had never ran into this problem with the three other laptops I have owned previously. Ironically, one was a toshiba, too.
