Jobs, anyone?

::Gripe Session::

I actually found out about this Tuesday a week ago. Tuesday night I had something to do. Wednesday night I looked for a job for a while. I found something interesting here in Huntsville. I WROTE DOWN the number of the place to call them on the morrow (as it was well after 1 am and I didn't have my resume updated). Thursday of last week I came home from work to find my computer off. I said aloud "Why is my computer off?" The wife replies, "Oh yeah, this afternoon while Jaxom was watching Scooby-Doo it just turned off." So, Monday night of this week (after my screw-up in ordering the wrong memory) I was able to get the sucker to turn on. I was able Wednesday night to locate my most up-to-date resume and start e-mailing it out. The other ironic thing is that the wife had a netflix movie: "The worst week of my life".

My situation is no where near as bad as his was, but man oh man I feel his pain.

Thanks for everyone's help in my woes! I really appreciate ya'll for the recommendations and pointing me to jobs.

Is there some reason you don't want to renew your clearance? Are you capable of passing at the top secret level or just some of the lower ones?

An individual does not have the option of renewing a clearance. The agency for which you work does that, at great cost. My clearance has been inactive for 6 years (3 years is the renewal date).

There are no reasons that I could not pass a TS. From what I understand, however, it takes a sponsoring company ~6months to get it through, then another 3 or 4 for it to be approved. I have heard that it is possible to "rush" it through in 3 to 5 months.

Do you know differently? If so, man oh man, I'm open to suggestions.

I saw that yesterday. That listing is a bit different than the one I saw. The one I saw said that the person had to have (also) strong OO development and have much experience with UML. I know of UML but have never used it. I've looked through careerbuilder and I have found something interesting on the north east side. I did apply for it yesterday. We'll see. Currently, I've applied for about 65 Jobs in the last 3 days. I have heard from a few, some I was rejected out of hand due to having too much experience -- I actually got e-mails saying "we have reviewed your resume and have decided that you are over qualified". I guess they are thinking I'd be out the door again in a couple of months; they're probably right. Something that trivial would probably not hold my attention.

Being that it is now the weekend, I'm really not expecting to find much out over the next couple days.

Edit: Eh, I applied for it anyway. We'll see. $50/hr is not really that much, when talking contract work (something like $25/hr salaried), but hey, it is better than nothing.

UML is a cakewalk. I would say someone with any experience could learn most of what UML class, sequence, and use case diagrams have to offer within a week or two...if that long. I've not found much use for the other types of diagrams from a programmer perspective.

Enterprise Architect makes UML simple and Visio does as well although not as robust.

I don't think you'll find much for decent pay. The only jobs I've seen lately have the requirements padded out so far your resume would need to enter the room several minutes before you. I think my favorite was one with "at least 5 years of experience" in both FORTRAN and C# with a "networking focus" backer. (I'm not joking.)

I second the freelance suggestion if you need the income. I "telecommute" when necessary and do a lot of freelance stuff.*

* And by "a lot of freelance stuff" I mean I even need to supplement my income with jobs outside of the programming/development world. I'm a general contractor, a freelance cable monkey, an electrician, a plumber, and I even work with some HVAC stuff.

Probably not a good match for you, but if anyone was looking for a software job in the Madison, WI area, there's Epic, where I work, that's rapidly hiring. The development though is all in MUMPS/M (server side) or VB6 migrating to C#.NET (client side). No experience with any particular language is necessary for consideration; you get quite a lot of training (3-6 months depending on how fast you progress and your exact role). The recruiters are more interested in your capacity to learn than in your existing skill set; most of the recruits are fresh out of college.

YMMV on the company, though. Some like it a lot, some think that demanding 45 hours/week borders on a crime against humanity. Some like the fact that there's few job titles and little emphasis on one's place in the bureaucracy, some hate the fact that they will almost certainly have a single job title for their entire career, even though their responsibilities and pay may change greatly. Some like the fact that salary is performance-based and not tenure-based, others hate that a more talented person many years their junior will quickly out-earn them. It's really the kind of job that you either love or hate.

Edit: Oh and the process for a TS clearance does take several months at least. No way around it. Even as a military member it took me several months to get approval. TS is an extensive process. Secret clearance is a lot easier to get.

At last (after two months) I have landed in a GREAT company! So, I do appreciate all of yalls help!

I even got to stay in Huntsville.

Edit: And, TBD is due any day now, so we'll actually have insurance to cover him/her.
