    Starcraft 2

I just got back from Best Buy. They had a Starcraft 2 midnight release party here, and so I went down and bought the game. I got it half off because I had a gift card that I've been purposely waiting to use until this game came out

I must say, I love the satisfaction of arriving at home and opening up a brand new computer game straight out of the box and thumbing through the "quick-start guide/instruction booklet" and looking at all the little extras in the box.

    Love it.

Did they even finish announcing all of the classes for Diablo 3?

I'd be more interested in Starcraft II if I had played Starcraft, but I might get it if it gets really good reviews. Though it'd have to be a decent single-player campaign because I don't have enough time to play online very often.

I really only got it for the single player because I rarely play online (read: almost never play online). I'll do the occasional LAN party if my friends happen to have the same game, but since Starcraft 2 doesn't have a LAN feature I don't know if that'll even happen.

So yeah, I really just got it for the single player campaign, and so far I'm loving it.

I played Starcraft a good bit, so I was initially excited about Starcraft 2 until Blizzard revealed that they were going to split the game up into three games. That severely dampened my interest, so I haven't kept up with it. Now to hear that it won't be playable at LAN parties? No thanks, I'll wait for it in the bargain bin, or at least until the "Battle Chest" version that inevitably seems to come out after they've finished milking the cash cow.

Thing is too expensive. 60$ for a digital download? Go screw yourself.
Local stores has it for even less than that (amusing that since Blizzard prices it at $60)! Still, it's too expensive.

Most new games are moving to $59.99 instead of $49.99. Not sure how they expect to get better sales with prices like that in the middle of a recession. Oh, my bad, the recession is over right?

    That is good news indeed.

I was going to get Starcraft 2 as soon as it went on sale at D2D, Steam, or Impulse. But since the box has all the little doo-dads in it and...um...manuals then I will probably go buy it at the store.

Now to hear that it won't be playable at LAN parties?
Perhaps it doesn't support LAN due to piracy concerns. Is that really a game killer? I'm sure you can do much the same by hosting a game and only allow friends to join it.

Yup, piracy is the excuse. Call me crazy, but I don't really want to host a game on Battle.net, only to have the evening devolve into a frustrating game of "who randomly gets kicked out of the game next?" That's the nice thing about LAN hosting; it doesn't depend on any external connections.

Ah...there is that. Again, though, is it really a complete game killer for you? Not sure that would cause me to give it a wide berth.

For me the main problem with not having a LAN game option would be that server games have considerable lag. It's a big difference if the data goes through 1 router and 10 meters of cables or 20 routers and 1000 kilometers of cables.

I guess another excuse they might have is that it requires extra work and most people don't really care about it.

Lack of LAN support is for me a bit more damaging that the general population. Since the 90s that I and a few friends run LAN parties once every month or two at each other places. It's an opportunity, an excuse, and a good time, to join the families have fun and entertain ourselves. No internet access can replace the warmth and the fun of having people in the same room.

As a side note: It's actually because of these LAN gatherings that I was able to teach and form a Mahjong regular group, for instance. Something that wouldn't be possible giving the rarity of mahjong players around the world.

Blizzard lack of support for LAN on Starcraft is however not solely an issue of piracy. It's probably even the less of their concerns. There's two other reasons. The most important one is to put an end to professional competition that tends to draw large amounts of money without Blizzard ever seeing any. South Korea game channels like Ongamenet (OGN) organize large-scale competitions, televised to millions of fans in large stadium-like gaming centers and can generate a good million dollars per event (citation needed). The other issue is the direction Blizzard wants to take Battle.Net into; apparently a gatekeeper for their products capable of centralizing and control consumers, and distribute ads (Blizzard's, Activision or partners). Not much different from when you buy an iPhone.

That said... I have only heard good things of single player in Starcraft II. And my own readings on the matter really make it look worthwhile. I'm still equating the possibility of buying the game. Frankly the only game I've been looking forward this year is Elemental: War of Magic. But Stracrft II may also make the cut after I start paying attention to what players are saying of its single-player campaign. But Battle.Net for online play? No, thanks. There's plenty of games with which I'm still having heaps of fun in LAN.

I actually received this in the mail today after Dell told me via email it would be a week before delivery. What a nice surprise!

Anyway, for those of you who complain about the price hike, most, if not all new games (whether console or pc) have a retailer give a special deal. For me this time, Dell lowered it down to $44.99 and I used 10% Bing Cashback to lower it another $4.50. So $40.50+tax is tolerable.

My first impressions of the game kind of give me a mass effect type of feel for it the way you are on a ship and can pick your missions at your own leisure. The campaign seems pretty fun (only about 25% of the way through), although I am kind of irritated they are splitting the game up to make money. I'll probably need convincing to buy the other parts.

Well, they had to adjust for inflation someday. Games for a long time were actually getting cheaper over time -- I remember in the Super Nintendo days, normal console titles could go from $60 to $70 apiece -- and that's $100+ in modern dollars.

Oh, and yes, the recession is over technically I believe. We've had three consecutive quarters of positive GDP growth, which I believe is the "official" criteria for the end of a recession. Though the economy is still sluggish of course.
