    Les Paul dead at 94

Guitar Legend Les Paul Dies - wcbstv.com

    Gutted

Now this isn't necessarily a dig at the MJ fans in the other thread (which after a long absence from this forum I notice is now closed) but THERE was a man who made a mark on popular music. The pioneer of the electric guitar and innovator of many breakthrough recording and producing techniques, including multi-track recording. Is it even POSSIBLE to have left a bigger mark on modern music?

Well, he certainly left his mark on the carpet (sorry, couldn't resist).

Tch. The man was murdered by racist ambulance attendants in Britain.

Les Paul had a bigger influence than Jimi did, sorry to burst your bubble. There wouldn't even be a Jimi Hendrix if it weren't for Les Paul.

Well, maybe so, but Hendrix was much much more of innovator style wise than Les Paul. Les Paul songs are nice, and he can play better than I can, but both the songs and the playing were, even for "the time" not all that different than things many other people were doing, at the same time.

Of course, as a innovator of technology, Les Paul is the man. But stylistically, I would say Link Wray, who was only 15 years younger, did more interesting things with it (the electric guitar).

"How High the Moon" is a nice pop song with some slick jazzy solos. But "Rumble" and "Spanish Castle Magic" are something else entirely.

And, technology wise, Hendrix did actually pioneer a lot of things...

I was actually thinking of the wah-wah pedal and distortion. Which, if you don't play guitar, you may think distortion is a good way to cover up sloppy playing, when in fact it is the other way around -- tiny errors in intonation show up much more clearly with distortion. People who play with a strongly "distorted" sound must be more focussed and careful, not less.

Of course, looking at pictures of Hendrix holding a guitar I would guess he had some "god given" advantages.

    Hendrix is (wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy) overrated.

Now that it's been said, let's talk about Les Paul, shall we (or at least not spend the whole thread saying X was better than him).

Just to set the record straight, he was most likely killed by his manager. His girlfriend may have been involved, as well, as there were many inconsistencies in her version of events. First of all, when the ambulance arrived, she was nowhere to be found (the apartment was empty, with the door wide open), and Hendrix had been dead for several hours (whereas she had claimed he was still alive at that point). She never spoke to the EMT's nor with anyone at the hospital, as she had originally claimed, either. Very suspicious.

Debatable. His most "popular" music was very cliched, IMO, but if you look a little closer you might find a real composer there. I always thought the avant-garde type stuff he did in informal jams around 1966 was some of his best (eg: Giraffe, Spiked With Heady Dreams, etc), but even some of his more well known songs (eg: Woodstock: Villa Nova Junction) were nothing short of genius. And just to be clear, I don't listen to his records much, either, but I can certainly appreciate his work based on it's artistic merits (on a side note, he was a really talented painter, as well).

Epic life. And a good death at the age of 94.
Man, did Les Paul changed our lives or what!

Hey, recent one hour interview with Les Paul right now on WBAI, 'cause apparently he loved the station.

If you're a big fan you could find this thru the WBAI site, the show is "Everything old is new again" and the day is today.

Wow, they played some trio jazz stuff first, really nice, he is pretty incredible.

Interesting interview, he tells a lot of stories about his life.
