    id Tech 5

First couple of news posts (until they add more): http://www.idsoftware.com/

Watch the stream, pretty interesting stuff. Apart from EA simultaneously releasing for the Mac and PC etc, the technology from id is just awesome.

Funnily enough I was thinking about 2 hours ago "id don't seem to be doing anything lately apart from Quake Wars". How wrong was I?

Heh, cool. Do you have to be an "actual" developer or can hobbyists go too? The wiki page wasn't too clear.

anybody can go as long as they have the money to purchase a ticket. I applied for and received the student scholarship, so I was able to go for free.

I reckon this is a sample of Carmack's mega-texture setup. Did you guys notice how fast the Apple responds to clicks? Windows would have to load the DLLs, lag, lag, and then play the movie in substandard quality.

He is just clicking and things are popping up immediately.

applications load DLL's, not windows. If you want faster applications, dont use DLL's. Better yet, spend 20 man-years on your development cycle instead of the 2 man-months that most companies expect (games are the exception, not the rule).

I think he was referring to the graphics API DLLs, so you wouldn't have much of a chance not to use them.

I believe that was all real-time rendered. And since Carmack is a proponent of OpenGL, wouldn't it mean then that the graphics APIs on both system would be pretty much equivalent in speed, since OpenGL is standard across platforms?

Not necessarily. That's like saying Java really is "write once run anywhere".
