Lightbulb Is there a program that can generate 3d models?

I know this sounds kind of lazy on my part , but I was wondering if there is a program that can generate a 3d model from a set of photographs, taken from all different angles of the object. Is there such a thing?

If there is, it isn't free.

    ...or cheap for that matter.

There is a printer that can create a 3d model based on 3d model data in a program...

    Pretty crazy...

And I dunno about what you suggested, my guess is no

Yeah, in our computer lab we have a 3d printer.

As for the 3d program, . Too bad. I have another question. I have a model saved in a 3ds format, with texture maps all built in. However, I want to export this to .obj for my program (I gave up trying with the 3ds loader I downloaded). Now, wavefront files do not store texture maps inside the file. So is there a feature in the program that allows you to export the texture map to a bitmap so I can load it into my program too?

you guys have one of those babies?

    they're like 50,000 dollars!

I mean they actually create a physical 3dimensional model..

about the size of a copy machine....

Yes, I've seen those things. The technology doesn't make much sense to me though.

I feel like an 80 year old man when I see things like that. Dag flab'm... you damn kids and your hokey concoctions!

What you suggest is possible (viewing 3D from various still shots). A friend of mine had to do this as an image processing assignment. I don't recall exactly how it works but in involves calculating eigenvalues, yeah, so thats about all I remember :P

There is a lot of research in this field, but I haven't heard of a commercial product working in the general case. There are 3D-scanners where you place an object on a rotating plate and it takes the images at predetermined angles, making the reconstruction easier.

our high school had one, and they are not 50,000$ they are more like 250,000 to 300,000, one of the teachers had an engineering company so he just leaves it at school so he can make models for clients at school, very cool. it was HUGE.

and making a 3D model from a picture is not possible at the moment, and i dont think i ever will be, but is an area of study in graphical computer science.
