People interested in Joint game making in the future

Alright this is probably WAY early but might as well start looking now and maybe getting some ideas but would any of you game programmers out there be willing to create a zelda game? I think that is what I wanna do for my first real game and people out there with knowledge of all the math and stuff would you be willing to tell me how hard this would be. Not the 64 version of Zelda the Super Nintendo would be more like it. Thanks

    Interested

I myself am looking to jump into my first real game and would like someone to work with. I have a good knowledge of Visual Basic and C / C++ and I am starting to learn OpenGL. As far as the math and stuff, I am not an expert but I have taken a few college maths. I loved the Zelda games and I think we should make a game exactly like Zelda but with different characters, storyline, etc.

Zelda?!?! HAHA.. you really think that all it takes to create something like Zelda is a few chaps from around the net getting together to "cut a bit of code"?? And if this is your first game, then i'm afraid to say that you have got no chance in hell.

It took a group of pros a very long time to come up with something as good as Zelda...

have you done any other games yourself before??

all i can say is good luck! And i mean that in the nicest possible way.

    Talking

I'll be keen to join the crew and have some fun. I know C/C++ Java and 3dMAX. I can also draw people/monsters which might help. I working on developing a full 3d model from a pencil sketch.
Get back to me if you are keen.

I think that this is a pretty reasonable first 'real' game to do actually. More difficult than say, a Dragon Warrior clone, but also more interesting. A wonderful opportunity to learn to make a tile-based graphics engine, and just the fun of high-level game development.

As for math, I think you're pretty safe there. As long as this thing is gonna be 2d, it may be difficult, but not for any math, just the difficulty of programming in general.

I would actually be a interested in making a graphics engine for this, however, since I'm pretty sure I have no chance of meeting any kind of deadline (I am very new to graphics, gimme six months or so please ), I'm not gonna be hopping on this bandwagon.

If you do plan on working with other people to make this game, I strongly suggest a bit of organization, and a lot of coding for the graphics, as soon as possible.

As I said in my first post this is a ways away also by real I mean code created by myself not cut and copy. I didn't not mean it as me picking up a book reading it and then busting out Zelda.

With all due respect..i think you should try and code your own Tetris clone or something first, especially if you are still cutting and pasting other people's code to make your programs/games.

Do one whole title by yourself, get a good feel for it. There's alot more in there than you think, and when you don't use anyone else's code, it's even harder.

    Good luck!

Firstly, let me say that it is excellent that you want to do a game. Secondly, it is reasonable that you understand it is a large effort and people are eager to help you.

    I say go for it.

You may or may not succeed-- that is not the point. The point is that you attempt the exercise and hence, greatly expand your learning.

If you don't try it, there are many things you simply won't learn. Trying to do it makes you focus your mind on a real problem.

Again, I say go for it, you have nothing to lose.

There is so much information available now, there is plenty of reference material out there. It's not like it was a dozen years ago when PC games were really still in their infancy.

For all the naysayers out there, the original poster of this thread didn't ask whether or not they could do it, they asked if anyone wanted to help.

If you don't want to help, shaddap.

    Happy Holidays, to all.

    OK ;)

I hate to burst that underinthuast's bubble

I'll ignore the misspelling.... there's no bubbles broken here. I never said "don't write a game at all" i am simply making the point of setting sights a little lower so that you don't get disheartened if/when a huge project such as a Zelda-like game doesn't get finished.

Finish something smaller first, and when that's done and you've grown in confidence, then go for your life!

If you don't want to help, shaddap.

    OK.. i'll "shaddap"

Hope you all had a great chrissy.

    ciao

I read somewhere that they ported the Classic Zelda from 8-bit or 16-bit Nintendo (I forget what it was) to the PC so it has already been done and you can get the source to it also. I don't recall exactly where that source is but you could probably find a link or reference to it on the following site.

    www.gamedev.net

Making a tile based game is a little weak in my opinion since it is behind the times. I think you would probably be better off, learning wise, making a mod of a 3D game already out there. One game that is cool and has excellent support for the MOD community is www.maxpayne.com. They have an SDK out and their own particle engines and their main engine which I believe you can download in order to design a neat game using there engines. The engines are the real work behind making a 3D game, once you have the engines done making the game is all Design work mostly and then programming the AI and reactions, damage, and trigger models.
