A good book im reading now for learning DirectX 8 is "Sams Teach Yourself Game Programming with DirectX in 21 Days". It sure will take you longer than 21 days, but it is worth the money.

Sam's books as a rule are not that good, I am also looking for a DirectX book, but it MUST be DX9, not earlier.

As DX9 just came out this year and good books can take a year or more to write, I imagine you might be waiting for a long time...
