You don't have to make a text game, but you have to start somewhere. You can't make Quake on your first attempt.
Learn the basics and get a feeling of how a game is constructed, how it functions. Then when you get more experienced you can make more advanced stuff.

Ive been working on a text game for awhile, and the big that helped me out was looking at someone's well annotated sourcecode. However, my game is now far more complicated than my initial example; where can I find more source code for text games?
