    Needing Expert Advice Please

Hello everyone , I recently decided to follow through one of my dreams in making an MMORPG with 2 other friends, now in order to make this game I need to learn C++ I am told, although I know nothing about it if someone could help me learn or e-mail me? *[email protected]* it would be greatly appreciated I really do need some peoples help, btw this is going to be an isometric game not 3D if that helps any .

No offense but don't expect anyone to drop everything to teach you to program. Everyone here will be more than happy to help you learn, but a free personal tutor is something all together different.

As for learning C++ there are tons of great free referrences on the internet. The main cprog site has a great set of beginner tutorials.

As for making a iso 2d game, once you've got some C++ under your belt and you're ready to start working on it, send me an email or PM. I've got a DX 2d iso engine that I'm going to release as opensource complete with graphics, sound, music, input and all the iso calculating functions (I'll be releasing a hex version, too. basically the same engine but the iso functions are replaced with functions to calculate for a hex map).

Not exactly sure what you mean by that. Are you asking about compilers? You can try out both Borland Command-Line and the Dev-C++ IDE, both of which are free. I don't have the URL's offhand, but I believ the main cprog site has links to them under their compilers section.

lol if you dont knwo wanything about C++ you cannot make an mmorpg its impossible i know the basics and i am working on makeing a good text game, you need to know c, C++, vb, opengl, directx, 3dstudiomax, and a bunhc of other stuff to make a mmorpg. You need a big budget without of talented people.

Do you have nothing better to do than discourage people? It would appear that the only difference between a MMORPG and a regular RPG is the number of people playing, and a multiplayer text-based RPG is well within the realm of C++. Virtuous already stated that it wasn't a 3D game, so I'd say StudioMax is out. If it was text-based, openGL and DirectX would also be out. C++ is (almost) a superset of C, so I can't think of a reason to learn C++ and then learn C. I don't see any connection between being able to program an RPG and knowing VB; one does not imply a knowledge of the other.

Virtuous, C++ is a great place to start. Go get a compiler and a good book and get to it. I started programming in C++ with intentions of game programming, and it's taken me a few years, off and on. You won't make a great game tomorrow, but you can do it eventually.
If I did your homework for you, then you might pass your class without learning how to write a program like this. Then you might graduate and get your degree without learning how to write a program like this. You might become a professional programmer without knowing how to write a program like this. Someday you might work on a project with me without knowing how to write a program like this. Then I would have to do you serious bodily harm. - Jack Klein

The hardest part is going to be the networking. The rest is pretty easy. I made my first tile engine like 3 or 4 months after I started C++. It took me a whole weekend. Now I can make one in 15 minutes . With all the tutorials on the cprogramming.com site you can throw together a decent text based game. Heck, you could make a MMORPG in text if you wanted to, you'd just have to check some sites for learning the networking for it. I still don't know any networking code, just because I've never looked anything up on it.

Here are some good sites that I use every day:

    http://www.cplusplus.com

Sadly, your sig is the perfect portrayl of LouDu. Hasn't he realized that he lost credibility on these forums a long time ago?

It would be wise to start out simple, With a nice C++ Tutorial .
It includes the language C++ and makes use of the Console
Application. This is not what you want, So taking a Graphics
Library is the next step, I suggest you check out Allegro , Or SDL for 2D purposes.
You could look into DirectDraw, But it's alot harder than a simple
    library.

    I'm still a beginner I think

I've been learning C++ for two years right now and I must say: the more I know, the more my doubts of ever realising a ,better game' than f.e. tetris increase.
Perhaps if I had to teach C++ I would start out with Windows Programming (if you learn all the cout stuff first my students could think programming in C++ was easy. but if the first lesson deals with HDC,DrawText,lpPrimarySurface->GetDC, than they know from the beginning that programming is A LOT OF WORK.)
One could say that playing games is fun, but programming only an easy game is hard work.
