...and this is Redoubt, my latest project. It's using the Quake2 and GameTutorials MD2 tutorial MD2s atm, so they may look kinda familiar.

Great merciful crap that game looks good, Bieh.

    BTW: Way to quadruple post.
Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

    Thanks

    Yeah, fear my shameless spamming
I wouldn't have done it, except it doesn't seem to be possible to put more than one attachment in a post (or at least I couldnt figure it out ), and Tripod wasn't cooperating

    A few questions for Bieh:
Is that all from scrap or are you using some tutorial or engine license?
Since you started 3D programming, how long did it take for you to reach where you are now?
    What tutorials/books have you used?

    And a comment:
    HOLY CRAP THAT LOOKS AWESOME!

At the rate it's going...around Christmas, depending on how much schoolwork I get, and if I can get ODE to work properly

Engine licence, no, but I was helped in the beginning by a couple of tutorials - the Gametutorials MD2 one, and another one on heightmaps (which I've lost the link for ). It's been a while since those, though (the game's been in dev. since late November '02). The ODE mailing list is also seems pretty good (though I've only started with ODE really recently, as you can probably tell from my sophisticated-looking vehicle ).

The weapon models are from Quake2; I'll have to get rid of them prior to release. If anyone knows any good sites for MD2 models like them, or wants to make me some (hint, hint ), let me know, please

I couldn't tell you an exact date, but I was working on SpaceWars II (now discontinued, see screeny above) in OpenGL for many months before I started Redoubt. I never really intended to finish that, it was just a convienent project to start on to learn OpenGL with. Despite that, it actually turned out to be pretty fun, though with serious performance issues (40fps with 16bots on a P42.2/GF4/512mb ).

I did a few little tech tests as well - my 'MyProjects/OpenGL' folder is full of things like hightmap_test1, particle, particle2, ode_test1, camera_test, etc etc. Redoubt first started life as heightmap_test4 .

    What tutorials/books have you used?
See above. Oh, and a few maths tutorials - going from the 2D of SpaceWars to the 3D of OpenGL was a bit of a shock in the beginning

    Thanks

...whew, that was a long post...

hey Bieh, do you know where I can find a tutorial on the theory behind particle engines? iknow some of it, by having the origin of the particle, and having a vector affect that, which is affected by gravity. but, where can I find some nice tutorials that focus solely on it?

No, it wasn't online. In an hour of extreme bordom, I gave the bots the ability to chat (most of the text is stolen from JoeBot for Counterstrike ).

It's actually pretty funny - they'll flame people when they get killed by them ("OMG Bieh is using the wall-h@x! kIck him!"), and when they kill people ("j00 sux0rs, Bieh!"), and they'll randomly say stuff every ~30secs ("did anyone play spacewars 1? quite nice ...") .

    particle engines
    Nehes site? ( http://nehe.gamedev.net )
    There's one on GamesUltra: http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20...derburg_01.htm

yeah, ive checked out NeHe's site, and can do a pretty simple one, but I was wondering if there is any one that goes into the more complex usages, like if their is a wall, the particles will bounce off and stuff.

you would need to look into collision detection for that. there is a tut on nehe's site for that and i think there is another one here.

Hey, bieh! Need music for that Redobut? I am really good at making mod music, and id be glad to help ya out!

I have another friend in the music biz, Wong Chung Bang, he's good, too. I can see if he can let you use some of his songs.

I make most of my game music, though im trying to get the gametutorials.com thing to compile on mods. Wont work.

So im using waves right now. Midis? Fuhgettaboutit. The midi conversion stinks on the program im using. SPC's? Gotta a few of them laying around.

I can email you some of my work if you like.

    Oh yeah, DIBS ON TESTING!

Pretty please? Can i test it? PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE? WITH A MOD MUSIC FILE ON TOP?

Hey, all i can do is kick *** text games.

Wow, looks nice. Reminds me of Starcraft (ah, the old memories flooding back...). What did you use for the graphics?
