    Check THIS OUT!!

    http://www.cs.uu.nl/people/markov/gmaker/index.html

All you ppl who wanted to make your own games, here you go. I found this site, it's a game-maker program that allows you to make 2D games really easily. It has tutorials and a community to help you get up to speed. **The site is unreasonably slow so try to download on off hours**

Also, look at the other site I posted here about the ray-tracer program for creating awesome 3D-scenes. You can that program at :

    www.povray.com
and Tutorials and Examples for the program at:
    www.runevision.com

and of course everything is FREE!!!

    Late...

I think it's more fun and rewarding to actually program your own games...

I think it's ludicrus for anyone to say that they created a game by themself when they didn't use actual code.

Myself, I create games for the fact that I'm actually accomplishing something with a useful skill---programming.

Sprites, eh? I could have done with this a few months back

But, yeah, I'd have to agree - it might take longer to make games by programming them, but it's definitally more rewarding than making them with a tool like this.
"It always takes longer than you think, even when you take Hofstadter's Law into account."

Bored? Try my game SpaceWars , made in Allegro and VC++
or see my new game Redoubt , made in OpenGL and VC++

I don't think you should put this TOOL down. I think that for those who wish to program their own game and get into game programming that this tool will cut their learning curve by at LEAST half. Many ppl don't even have a clue what elements go into making a game - I garantee you that if you get adept at making games with this tool, porting it over to a C++ game is not too much work.

Y'all seem to be ignoring the other TOOL that is incredible in my opinion, POVray. This teaches you how to create 3D scenes progmattically - I've been having trouble finding good tutorials about how to create 3D objects and how I would need a 3D program to do so. When I found a tut. it was assumed that I knew about stuff like NORMALS, BICUBIC PLANES, etc. This program has great tutorials for all of this. Although the scripting lang. is not C++ it is easily transferrable.

All of you seem to be saying that is better to struggle for 6-mos. to 1-yr trying to make that game you had in your head than to spend a month working with this tool and then migrating over to C++ and creating your game in C++ in a few weeks. Seems ridiculous to me.

this tool will cut their learning curve by at LEAST half
It will also probably half the design options they have, half any programming knowledge they could get, and half any sense of accomplishment*.

*Note: Actual statistics may prove to be more in favour of real programming

But personally, i gain a lot more from using C++. And to be honest, i had a look at it all, and i reckon that i made way cooler stuff with Klik and Play than i saw on the examples page :P Hehe.

technically no one writes their entire games, they still rely on some library or some high level functionality to do what they want, even in console

That is, of course, if you program in assembly (*gasp*)

    ok ill stfu now

There's a huge difference between using a GUI interface and creating your own code when creating a game. Clicking on a bunch of buttons isn't creating a game, IMO. Using libraries that contain drawing, keyboard, sound, mouse, etc routines is still creating a game, because the libraries don't include any of the actual game creation. I'm not even sure how you can make a comparision between the two.

I agree. Why don't we all commit group suicide by downloading DarkBasic? Let's just sell out souls to Satan by getting some stupid game template creator.

    You guys are ridiculous...

Here's a link to some dude has made games with game maker
    http://home.tiscalinet.de/xception/games_e.htm

So you guys are saying that using a tool to create your games is dumb, then you are saying that every game producer out there is dumb. All of them use GUI tools to help them make the game, pretty much all of them use a MAP MAKER tool for there 3D levels/2D levels. Most games are made by designers using an EDITOR created for that certain game engine they're using - an editor that needs little tweaking from the TEMPLATE provided by the owner of the engine.

90% of a game is in the art/design coding is only a small part, if your artwork looks like crap your game will look like crap. If your gameplay concept sucks your game will suck. There is almost always a 3-1 relationship in the number of designers/artists to programmers.

This TOOL, can at the very least be used to plan out your game and can be easily ported into a pure C++ game. If you make enough 2D games you'll find that you may need a GUI program to ease development and design - one that supports scripting....

Well **** here it is... LOOK UP TOP...

How are we ridiculous? Because we feel that it's not literally creating a game by using a tool (not code!) that was created by someone else?

So you guys are saying that using a tool to create your games is dumb, then you are saying that every game producer out there is dumb.
No on the former and no on the latter. As to using the game maker, I don't think it's neccasarily dumb; I'm sure a lot of people make good use out of it. However, it's still not creating a real game. A real game is created by using all of your own creativity and original thought process---not selecting a bunch of options!

All of them use GUI tools to help them make the game, pretty much all of them use a MAP MAKER tool for there 3D levels/2D levels. Most games are made by designers using an EDITOR created for that certain game engine they're using
I'm not sure if you realize this or not, but those editors and map makers were created "in-house" (by the programmers of the game) and not by a third party. The editors are created to help simplify and expand the flexibility of creating certain aspects of a game, such as the maps. Now the games aren't made by the designers in the least bit. The designers come up with the decisions of what features should be added, the stats of the characters, and other gameplay decisions. This doesn't mean the designers are the ones creating the games. The creators of the games are the programmers who are creating the engine of the game, the editors, and programming whatever else the designer sees to be fitting for the game. Ok I'm done talking about the subject, because there's no point in arguing.
