    Copyright Laws

I have almost finished my first WinAPI program and my first game, it's Battleships. I hope to be able to post it and e-mail it to friends to see what they think. I have however used some bitmaps and .wav files that I have on my computer from another game, Civ 2 to be precise. Are there any legality issues with me letting people play my game like I say?

Most commercial games copyright their artwork. You can't use
them even if you develop a non-commercial game.

That is true. However, I doubt your friends will turn you in. So its really a judgement call for you. Also, you can find some free use wav's and bitmaps online! Just use google and you will be successful. Simple wav's and stuff are a dime a dozen.

Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

Getting a bit slow this early in the morning? (or late at night, depending on how you look at it)

Yep! It's really not actually that late yet but I'm not running on much sleep.

I don't think the companies will sue you unless you are selling it or saying you made the stuff yourself. Otherwise it would be a waste of their time. Unless they are extremely money-hungry or something.

I don't have to worry. Everything I put in my games is completely original. I am getting pretty good at art and sound, so I do most of it myself, although my gf does some artwork as well. The only things not original is Allegro, but it is free, so I won't get sued for that .

    yes its illegal,

what won't happen, unless you game becomes a really big hit, you most likely won't be sued, unless you refuse to comply with a cease and desist order.

what will happen, if the don't like what your doing they will send you a cease and decist order demanding that you stop distributing their stuff, if you fail to comply they will sue.

i don't think companies are quite at the level of villiany yet to go after somebody sharing the resurces with a friend. free distribution and they might get a little edgy.

    Conclusion,

using thier stuff is not a good idea. don't if you can help it.

Don't worry, it's not Infogrames who has the legal rights to the game; like they do with Civ3. Microprose owns the rights to Civ2, however, Microprose no longer exists. Basically I wouldn't be too worried about using Civ2 art in a non-commerical game.

Btw, Civ2 was such an awesome game!!!

Microprose don't exist anymore? They had some great games. That's a shame.

But like he said, it is smart to use your own stuff.

Compress the image slightly strech it a bit mix up the textures erm.. put it through a filter and it's a total different image. (and most of the time you'll get some pretty descent stuff)
