    OpenGL question

I was just wondering if there was a easier way to create like a cube in OpenGl? In everyother library and stuff I have worked with there was usually functions for the more simple shapes.... but in OpenGL u have to specify all 6 sides of the cubE??? I think that is very tedious work and thought that there was prolly a easier way. There usually is an easier way for everything?

    Thanx
    Kas

what's so terrible about creating your own cube function? then just call it whenever you want a cube.

no. to put it simple this would defy everything OpenGL stands for. and would begin its eventually self destruction.

it's like this, OpenGL is not made to only give you the most basic primitives to draw with, thus allowing you the absolute most control over how its drawn.

Yea I understand its just everytime I have posted questions about other librarys on any message board. People have always said things like "WHy would u do it like that and always show me a easier way to do it" so I just figured that it would be the same with opengl.

that is what i am goin to do thanx.

I would also like to establish one thing
    I was just wondering
was pretty much the key statment in my post. I wasn't trying to attack the OpenGL library or anything like that I was just sitting there reading a tutorial and thought jeez there must be a easier way to do this so I figured I would ask. I would hate to contribute to the evenutal self destruction to the opengl library by asking a simple question. So I a thousand apologies to anyone I have offended with my doltish question. From now on I will be much more considerate and only ask questions which I feel won't displease anyone.

please continue asking questions about OpenGL. Just be aware that there are a few people here who take it personally for some reason. no-one in particular. I think he's trying to defend it with every last breath because it is not microsoft. that's usually people's feeling when they get like that about OpenGL, linux etc...

Barjor, I was reassuring the newbie. he just got attacked in case you hadn't noticed. At least he felt he was being attacked. I just didn't want him to leave the board because of certain member's jumping to defend a stinking library.

    Well.....

    lol.....
I wasn't planning on leaving anyways its just I got sick of seeing certain people ( there are only a few ) deciding that everyone who has just started programming and has a newbie type question is inferiour to them. And They sit there and try to boost their ego by trying to elaborate on their intelligence and when in fact they aren't as smart as the think they are. Not everyone has a psyhic ball in which they can find the awnser to their "Stupid Newbie question" that is what these boards are for. You have people on here who are extremely good at what they do and still ask a question from time to time. No one is too good to help others and even I try and help ( although what I can actually help with is very limited ) so I think if u are here just to try and boost your ego by laughing at other people who are trying to learn u might as well leave because there will be a time when u need help because nobody knows everything.
Anyway sorry about the speech but I was sick and tired of seeing newbies attacked and when it hapeened to me over such a simple question I got sorta sick of it.

preach on brother! All programmers can be arrogant, but not all have to be jerks on the board. A board that is likely full of jr.highschoolers anyway.

I agree with the n00b defenders here...I've asked some dumb questions on the board on topics that I don't know about...but yet I help people with what I do know...which is mostly math (: And while some of the questions I have seen I have looked at and thought...that's pretty easy, I help people out anyway, because it doesn't take THAT much time, and everyone needs help from time to time. We aren't all experts on everything. Neither are you no-one.

WTF! is this just bash no-one day or what?

I answered his freaking question and exaggereatedly stated the danger of such a thing, and that it was frowned apon, and gave him the reasoning behind it.

so you can bite me if you don't like how i did it.

    >Neither are you no-one.

what do you know about it.

To get back to the point...

You can use a 3D modeler, such as Blender, and then export the models in a format you can read into an OpenGL program. This way you can create complex objects and load them into your program.
I would suggest looking into the vrml format as it is very easy to understand and get data from.
