Want to be the greatest game maker of all time?(interesting discussion topic)

Well, I have the same goal. In order to achieve that I must conquer others who are also aiming for that goal. Here are the steps that I'm taking to reach my desired level of superiority:

    1. Play Vide Games(done)
    2. Love Games(done)
    3. Learn C++(done)*
    4. Learn Win32(just started)
    5. Learn Opengl
    6. Get high grades in school(trying to)
    7. Go to digipen(hard task)
    8. Find a company to work for(most American companies are bad at making games, ie: Accliam)
    9. If I have enough dinero, I could start my own game making company(but its impossible to be CEO and game designer/programmer at the same time).
    10. MAke better games than Shigeru Miyamoto(I truely believe I could do this).
    11. Be labeled as the greatest game designer/programmer of all time.

Well if you're going to be the greatest game maker ever that makes my goals easier.

    - Be better than you.

Thanks for taking all the hard work out of it.

i'd be fine with not being the greatest programmer as long as i program the greatest game. Oh yes.. It will happen! Just gotta learn how to make all these ideas a reality

Actually Everyone is already better than you, even if they have only programmed for one day. I looked at your code and its horrible! Worse than spaghetti code in C!

    3. Learn C++(done)*
I doubt this. C++ programming is a very complicated, deep subject that requires years of practice until you become a pro.

Paul "Midnight" Nettle has answered a question in his AskMidnight column ( www.flipcode.com/askmid ) that explains why learning C++ isn't that easy ( implicitly since the question's about practical proramming, as far as I recall )

C++ is a beast, what most of us do is just learn the simple side of C++, the beautiful face. This helps you make good games, but to make groundbreakers you have to be an expert ( John carmack is an EXPERT C & asm programmer, that's why his engines are the fastest/best )

    9. If I have enough dinero, I could start my own game making company(but its impossible to be CEO and game designer/programmer at the same time).
Noone starts as an entrepreneur ( I hope this is the right spelling ). If you want to be a Carmack/Molyneux, you have to start from the beginning - a beta tester, or if you're really good, a programmer.

    10. MAke better games than Shigeru Miyamoto(I truely believe I could do this).
Ehm, ehm... Who's Shigeru Miyamoto? Pardon my ignorance

Well, right after I'd read the name, I recalled that I read some article on gamespy about the "30 most influential people in the games industry", and I thought "Didn't I see that name in the 1st position? And then I didn't even read it ( cause I didn't know him )" I recall that I was shocked to find carcmack the 3rd ( not the 1st ) & Sid Meier the 2nd.

So I went back to the article and read the article to fix the ignorance issue here

So he's the one behind mario & zelda... hmmm. He's a great designer then, yet he does RPGs only right?

Well, that's not exactly the job of a programmer, if you know what I mean.
There on gamasutra, I read some interview with Tim Sweeny ( Unreal graphics engine maker ). He was asked about the "fun" factor & such, he said that it's not his job, and that his job is to work on the graphics engine....etc ( as far as I recall, I hope I haven't mistaken here )

    11. Be labeled as the greatest game designer/programmer of all time.
Don't work to be labeled as the greatest game maker. If you can't find self-satisfaction, that is if you can't be happy just for making games, don't make them.
You're going to face numerous problems when making games, and a lot of disappointments too. So unless you like it, you won't go on.

    12) Make better games than John Romero (post-id).

Would this be considered aiming a bit too low...?
Yeah, I recall that I saw some ad about the legendary ( heh heh ) daikatana and it had some pic of Mr Romero from some cool angles, with some text under it that says he was from the people behind Doom & Quake.

Maybe a couple of months later, I was reading through the Doom & quake source code, hoping to find something coded by him!
As far as I know, the only thing he's written is some DOS text-viewer that displays the readme file when you unpack the package ( The Wolf3D package, as far as I recall). Wow!

But isn't he just a level designer? His name was written in the "Designers" section, in Quake 1.

    Just to add something :

    13. Be experienced with computer hardware & internal operation.

John carmack has contributed a lot to the graphics cards industry, and he's been responsible for numerous new features.
Knowing the hardware is a key to writing good games software ( My point of view, not necessarily right )
