You can do both in C# and you can do both with the free compiler that comes with the .NET Framework SDK from Microsoft. You are missing out on a great editor/IDE, but if you can code with notepad or SharpDevelop ( a free IDE ), you can write any C# code you want.

wow I might be new to programming but geez guys learn how to steal software, well not steal just use without paying. There are thousands of networks and servers set up on IRC for people like you and I.
Why pay corporate pricess when you dont have to? Paying should be a crime...

I installed VS .NET yesterday. Until then, I had been working with the freebie csc.exe compiler in the framework package, works fine for learning the language.
Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity unto the dream.
@Jotun:
The mods will smite you for encouraging the pirating of software. How do you know that one of us hasn't been working on one of the pieces of software that you're stealing?
Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

Wow! i just downloaded SharpDevelop and i realise what i've been missing out on. The coding for a windows GUI program in C# is about 4 times less than that of the same program in C. Microsoft hit a good one with this language.
Well, as you said, you don't have to. Get a student version ( I think it's free, or as low as $99 ). Get free tools like SharpDevelop. Why pay corporate pricess when you dont have to? Paying should be a crime...
If you say that you don't want to pay for a commercial product, but rather steal it, I cannot really do anything for you but waiting for you to grow up and realize that you steal a fellow coders work. You are not only stealing, but even from your own family. Shame on you.

They "aquired" their lead designer from Borland. In case you wonder why C# code looks like a c-ified Delphi code :-)Originally Posted by ejholmes
As for Sharp Develop - it's really good. Especially since we all might be lucky and MonoDevelop merges back into SharpDevelop one day. In that case your SharpDevelop projects would be ready for cross platform use.

Theft is theft, Jotun. Intellectual property may be less tangible to some, but it's property none the less. There are plenty of folks that make good software freely available. Don't rip them off when they're just trying to pay the rent with some of their work.
I've tried sharpdevelop and its ok but borland's c#builder is much better. It's had a similar look and feel to visual studio.net i think. The personal edition is available at their website http://www.borland.com/products/down...rpbuilder.html

I don't think there is a free edition of Visual Studio .NET
You can check http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/howtobuy/ to get prices.
SharpDevelop and Borland C# Builder Personal Edition are free and can be found by googling.

I say that if you don't use the software for profit (example, your just playing around with C#, not making software for sale), then it's not a big deal... you shouldn't have to pay to play !
BTW, are there any Linux C# compilers?
