Not sure if you guys already knew, but Microsoft recently announced that they will be giving away Visual Studio 2008 Pro (along with other things) free of charge to students. You can check it out here https://downloads.channel8.msdn.com/

Yep, already seen this. Wonder if they'll start giving away other tools at a later date.
The only requirements are that you're a student in one of the following countries:
United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Germany, France, Finland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Belgium
They'll add more at a later date, but that's it for now.
Don't get it! It's a fake candy: watch that page background!!!
Oh my god it's like pinocchio going to be a donkey.
Get emule and download it!
Microsoft sabotage else no future for us...

But look at the background!

except for the problem of too many layers of indirection.

Cool! Do you need to be a full-time student to get them, or can you get them if you're just taking 1 course?
My school isn't on that list, but I'm already a part of the academic alliance so they have their products on the school computers. I use the express and other open source ides so I'm not hurting for their master suite.
I got VS2005 pro for £5 from my college, which was apperently to cover the admin costs for lending out the disc.
While its free the EULA is very resrictive. for example you cant use it for commercial software, you are only allowed to keep it for a limited amount of time.
I got MSVC 2005 free from Microsoft a while back by watching some videos. They sent it to my house, and I didn't pay a dime. However, I hear 2008 isn't much different from 2005 so I'll just stick with what I got, but I'm glad Microsoft does this kind of stuff. Can't wait for MSVC 2012!!!!

I still use Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 with all updates. And it works fine.
Is there much difference between Beta 2 and the final version?
