I've been reading about executing an external command in this FAQ. Also when I do some googling, I've found out about popen() and pclose(). The question is what's the difference of popen/pclose with system, spawn and exec? Which is better?

popen/pclose give you a convenient way of reading the standard output (or writing to the standard input) of the command you invoke.
system() just does what you would type at the command prompt.
spawn/exec provide increasing levels of control over the details.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.
