Most good books on C++ have a learning edition of VC attached.
Look for a good book ( not exactly cheap however ) and you get two for the price of one.
howdy,
you sound like a prime canidate for linux - the OS is free the compiler is free the documentation is free. check it out. im using gcc to learn C++ and the Emacs editor both work just fine and are very simple to use.

i have Mandrake linux :)
If you're using linux, try pico for an editor. Easier to use than either emacs or vi. You could also check out www.editpadclassic.com for a free editor with some nice features.
Naw i have Windows 98 and Linux, i use Windows 98 when im programmin :)

I did, too :) I think CompUSA had a day where they decided to take leave of their senses. Well, it was either 80 or around 60. I can't quite remember. It was a while ago.
Download a free version of Linux and get gcc/g++ for free.
howdy salvelinus,
i found emacs to be pretty easy to use, it has highlighting and compile/linking right from the editor.
i have seen quit a bit of talk about pico but have not been able to find it in my installation of RH.
is it an add on, if so can i get an RPM for pico?
thanks
