Load dll at runtime in unix

My Unix program doesn't know at compile time what dlls it will be using. Each dll will have a few predetermined interface functions, but otherwise will be unique. How can I access these dlls and those interface functions at runtime?

I'm actually kind of surprised that I can't figure out how to do this. I used to do it all the time in Windows.

The Advanced Linux Programming book has some useful material on this.
