I tried it before, but you have to have some pretty detailed and well maintained databases of what to actually look for. Most AV companies have teams of scientists working round the clock to track viruses.

The best thing to do is collect viruses and analyse them to see what they do. I've noticed that a lot of VBScript-based viruses put stuff in the registry. I'd imagine scanning and fixing macro viruses is a lot easier than scanning and fixing executables with viruses.
