In the world of operating systems, there are two kinds of interfaces to the user. The one you are familiar with and use pretty much all of the time is referred to as a Graphical User Interface, or GUI for short, and this is where you have the desktop with all the icons and you run programs by pointing and clicking. The other type of interface is command line, where you have the black screen with the white blinking cursor and you type commands instead of pointing and clicking. DOS is a command line interface. Windows is a GUI.
