My grandma's cousin recently told me that C++ programming is liek money in the bank... is there any truth in that? Also I would like it if yuo could just give me some ideas for a simple program that would help me understand c++ better... ?
He would be sending me MS Visual C++ sometime in the mail is that any good compared to others? He also said he wanted to get me started on Java and .NET ... Are any of those languages hard to learn?
P.S. I dont have the MS VC++ yet
MSVC++ is the best editor there is. Sounds like you'll be getting an illegal copy.
Knowing C++ is not money in the bank. It's a lot of work, for not much money, if you get a job at all. The industry sucks right now. The only people that really make money are the ones that are good. (Salem, I hope you're making a load o' cash)
C++, .NET, and Java are all very powerful languages, and as such, aren't exactly easy to learn/use. I don't have any experience with .NET, but Java is a lot like C++, but simpler. Really, I guess whether they're "hard to learn" depends on your programming experience (I'm guessing you have none), your logical skills, your ability to memorize things and then apply them, and your motivation, and your motivation, and your motivation.

C++ and Java are very powerful languages. .NET is not a language, it is a programming platform from what i understand. it is used in conjunction with a programming language (C++, VB, etc...)
Learning C++ is really like any skill -- if you develop it very well, you can make a lot of money with it. If you do a half-assed job, you'll get a half assed salary, though.Originally posted by Ice Gecko

C++ is not hard to *understand*, per se, but it takes more than simple comprehension to program *well*. It's like any skill -- you can learn the mechanics with relative ease, but only by practice and dedication to self-improvement will you truly be good at it.

ohh boy.. come to India.. Every street corner here will have a cyber cafe and none of them will have any liscenced s/f. But they will have all hi teh softwares such as Maya, 3D Max, Oracle, XP etc etc.. not that i am saying it is right...
We need less accusing and more programming! Although, it may be nice to pay big old Microsoft for their product. There are plenty of free c++ compilers that do the job, if you don't want to pay money or break the law.Originally posted by 7stud

So if he paid for the whole thing and sent me a copy its illegal? What if he bought a ohhh.... whats the word... another license for both of us

If he bought it, and sent you a copy without uninstalling his copy, it's illegal. If he bought it, gave you the copy, and removed it completely from his computer, it's legal. And if he bought a second license, it's legal as well.
You'll find people here don't like pirated software. Many people here write software for a living, others for a hobby, and nobody wants their work stolen.
I'm always encouraged by the high moral standards of this board! Gee, that sounds sarcastic... but it's not.
Personally, I would NOT advise you to buy a compiler just to try-out programming. You might not even like programming!
Like Cat said, programming is a skill. To quote myself from yesterday "It's not like learning to send Email, it's like learning karate, or like learning to play the guitar."
It is good idea to use the same compiler as you "teacher".
so, my advice is: Go ahead and "try-out" the apparently illegal copy. If you are still interested in programming after about a month, you should get a legal compiler.
Microsoft sells several configurations of MSVC++. The least expensive is about $100. And, it is quite adequate for learning and home use.
