    Microsoft Visual Studio.net Professional

    Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the correct board but none of the other ones seem better.

I've been programming in C++ and using the Borland command line compiler for a while and can programming just about everything I want to do and, I've started learning about windows programing. But the command line is very inconvient to use. I can get either MSV C++ from the University Bookstore for $99 or the University has an aggrement with Microsoft so that I can get Microsoft Visual Studio.net Professional for $40. I've read that Microsoft Visual Studio.net Professional is more about web apps and server, and PCC, but will I be able to use it for my basic windows and console prgraming in C++. I would rather get the cheaper software. Thanks for your input.

VisualStudios.NET includes Visual C++ as well as a host of other things that happen to be about internet. If you can get it for $40, get me one!

Yes, get Professional for $40! It contains VC++ 7.1, a fantastic compiler, it can do any Windows or DOS apps, and it's much better than the educational version you'd get at the bookstore.

Visual studio .NET professional 2003 is probably the best suite out there. The fact you can get a $1040 software suite for $40 is a fantastic deal.

BTW, if the version you're getting is the 2002 version, I highly recommend you pick up the upgrade to .NET 2003 -- available from MS for $30, but that deal expires in August, so go for it quick. The 2003 version is significantly better than the 2002 version, worth the upgrade price.

Thanks for the quick replies. I read the MS website, but I wasn't sure that it included the C++ compiler. The University has a great deal with Microsoft, you can get just about any software for $40, if you're a student .

well make sure that the one you're buying includes C++. There are several packages that are part of Visual Studios. All can be bought individually. Make sure you're getting either the whole thing or at least the C++ package.
