    Minix or Linux

Do a search for Minix. It's supposed to be a simple open source operating system for learning purposes. Linux is open source too, so you can look at the code.

As I learned from this board, writing an operating system is an exercise that is required of most computer science students.

actually, i would go so far as to say all. hehe, well at least at my school. cmput 379 is a required course for CS here, and it is an OS course where you have to write your own OS ( im assuming its a simple one but i dont know, i take that course next year )
