    Network Program

Right, first of all, this is NOT a homework. This is a program I am creating to help me run a LAN Party. I need to be able to create a program that either (a) searches for an IP address and a specific file on a hosted computer to open.
or (b) Takes a given IP address and looks for the file.

It will only be running on windows OS's from 95 to XP. The servers will be running on XP and they will be running this program.

Also, does anyone know of any way to cycle the IP address of a server and automatically change the user connections so they do not notice the change?

I do not want a full program written. just advice on where to look.

    Thanks in advance.

Well, in order to placate certain users I need to increase security. So only users who have registered with me 48 hours beforehand and have a special pre-loaded individual coded file which is verified by my computer.

This is the first LAN party in the area and people are concerned as to 'unwanted and donated' programs. I'm not too worried though.

Since you've already been to some. Can you give me any hints on how to host them. I've looked on the LANparty.com website and taken some of their advice. But I have never actually been to one.

They have a .com??? NO $$$$ hahaha. Well we had about 2 or 3 before we perfected it, honestly. As far as security, put strict permissions on your servers, then on each individual computer only allow the permissions u want other or specific people to have. Should someone install a program it is by they're own free will, making it their problem. Random ip's and such is a waste of effort. Keep the servers near you and just keep an eye on them. If you see a sudden or lengthy increase in traffic (the lights on the hub can show this) to the server(s), check them out.

At a lan party everyone plays the games, if someones not, check it out. Nobody really messes with anything at these because they are out numberd to begin with. Paranoia is understandable, but i've ran 27 (28 this spring break), and i've never had an issue.

    Sorry about the delay.

First, thanks for the advice, helpful but I found a program that'll do it for me, MFA LanMaster.

Second, the event will be held at my school in Chatham, Kent, in the UK. On the 11th April 2003, From 1800 to late.

If you do want to take part e-mail me at: [email protected]. The details will then be sent out to you. You'll have to register by the 9th April at midnight though. As that is a condition the school has set. :-( Anyway, should be fun. And may become a refgular event...

[EDIT] Date Change, now permanent, 23rd April 2003, starts at 1100, set up at least 1/2 hour beforehand, runs till late. [/EDIT]
