I personally think you would be better off with the Deitel 3rd ed (lavender) cover. I have the 4th edition (blue) cover- since I am an instructor I get free copies. They made changes to it which I feel make it not as good as the previous editions. I would not teach out of this new edition(4th) but the previous I had no problems when I taught out of it.
Bottom Line: Really look to see if it fits your needs- otherwise try to stick with the previous editions.

Deitel books are about the most worthless books you could ever buy. Whoever in the CSUF computer science department decided Deitel & Deitel textbooks are the best choice should be shot.

I disagree, the Deitel book is very useful. It is very comprehensive and covers pretty much everything you'll need to know for quite a while, although I would imagine its a little hard to digest if your just starting out on C++.

The best reference on C++ is probably Bjarne Stroustrup's The C++ Programming language, but that book isnt good for starting off
I personally love the Deitel & Deitel books, and the C++ is the best I have found on that language (and I'm still using the 2nd ed!) Their Perl book is also excellent, and I look forward to getting into their VisualBasic book (haven't gotten around to that language yet).

Every Deitel book I've read/glanced through I've found to be inadequate in material coverage and quality. Perhaps they wised up and fixed their crappy books with their newer editions.
Since I don't own any Deitel and Deitel books, I'll have to borrow one or visit Borders so I can be more explicit with my claims rather than a brief couple sentences. It's been a couple years since I've laid my eyes on a Deitel and Deitel book.
*edit* probably the worst part of the Deitel & Deitel books that I can recall are the horrible code examples. Bad style, bloat code (which is misinforming) and a few other things.

I don't see anything wrong with their c++ code which
is pretty standard compared to some. The problems
I see is that the book kind of goes too slow for me and the overview on oop and ood doesn't have too much.
I just got a extra free copy of the Deitel C++ (4th ed) book. I gave it to my dept sec, but hey- if any of you are wiling to pay for postage. I can send it to anyone (within reason).
This does not include the lab manual or instructors CD for the book- I am keeping those!!!

I used a Deitel & Deitel book in a Java class I took. The only problem I had with it was the way they started the language. The last thing you should learn or want to know in Java is applets.
That's about the only thing I dont like about the D's Java book as well the applets.
