You might want to start by checking that you downloaded Microsoft Visual Studio rather than Visual Basic.
As for starting a blank project: it should be quite easy to figure out, but I do have two tips:
- When you are creating the project, you will likely see a bunch of options for project types. Choose the one that says something like "console project" if you're going to write a program involving a command prompt rather than a graphical user interface.
- If the option for precompiled headers is checked, uncheck it. This feature can be pretty useful for large projects, but for a beginner who is just starting out, it can make things confusing or become a crutch.
