In my opinion Bruce Eckel's thinking in C++ Second Edition Volume One: Introduction to C++ is the best.
I think the highest I saw was $70.
C++ How to Program by Deitel and Deitel.
for 2 reasons....
1) its the best newbie to intermediate book I have ever read.
2) it comes with a cdrom containing MSVC 6 (only the intro edition but still the nuts of a compiler)
